What to do with used oil?

/ What to do with used oil? #11
As posted earlier, any shop that uses waste oil for heat will likely gladly take it... our shop at work has one, we collect and store what oil changes we do to our company trucks thru the summer, and no doubt by mid winter, we are out, dumping off road diesel in there to supplement what is needed. I take my oil to work.

But the local advance auto parts store takes customer waste oil, up to 5 gallon per week, more if you "know people". Prior to this job, that was my disposal method.

My garbage man takes 2 gallons a week. I just put them by my trash can in 1 gallon milk jugs labeled "used oil". There are also times of the year they have a hazardous trash pickup so you can bring it to where they have the event and they will take it off of your hands.

Our local shop up here in beautiful Vanderbilt has a fuel oil furnace with about a 1000 gallon tank. He has a 55 gal drum with a 1/4" screen to catch any big stuff when you dump your oil. He pumps the thick oil and mixes it with fuel oil, then filters it on its way into the big tank. Has a big fuel oil forced air furnace to heat his diesel repair shop... AND IS GLAD TO GET IT...!!!!!

I own property In Iredell County, NC and Oconee County, SC. Both counties have multiple manned convenience centers (i.e., waste transfer stations) that accept oil and antifreeze.

Use it to start brush burning piles, coat the trailer deck once a year, coat my bridge deck once a year. Have a 55 GL barrel with a tilting stand to store in and then lay over an drain into a bucket. Never filled the barrel yet in 5 years.

All of the uses previously mentioned are good. I also keep a couple old coolers about half full of used motor oil to store chains. I also use it for bar&chain lube on my chainsaws.

Autozone, Advance auto, OReilly Auto & Walmart will take used oil, 5 gallons at a time. Local municipal HazWaste facility will take 20 gallons at a time.

Neighbor coats his trailer deck boards with his.
I used to have a copper line gravity fed with a valve and metal can that I'd dump motor oil in for my old Ben Franklin cast iron stove in the shop. Letting it drip in On the wood would feed the fire nicely. Had to be careful though, that old stove got cherry red a few times I remember.

+1
Almost every car/ truck repair shop around here has them. With oil changes less often these places will take all they can. The recycle places collect old oil and sell it to the shops when they run low.
I just give it to the shop up the road. No middle man.

I collect used oil in gallon jugs of any sort and take it to the city landfill where they send them someplace.

Or, many times I will drain oil and then put in an old Nesco roaster pan and then put it in the burning barrel and lite it up with the rest of the garbage, at night. That is the easiest.
