What to do with used oil?

I own property In Iredell County, NC and Oconee County, SC. Both counties have multiple manned convenience centers (i.e., waste transfer stations) that accept oil and antifreeze.

Same here for me in Catawba County. I typically run it down to the convenience center once a year when I get my tractors serviced. They also have a waste container for the old oil and fuel filters. You can also take it to the local auto parts stores. They have bulk containers for used oil.

I use to store it in a 55 gallon barrel and add a Penta product. I'd soak wooden fence posts in the barrel - supposed to add life to the posts. However, I can no longer obtain the Penta product (thanks to EPA) and have given up on wooden fence posts - strictly T-133.

Nearest recycle facility is over 30 miles away so I use it to start fires in my slash piles.

There's a guy locally with an ad on Craigslist who buys used oil....any amount. You can also take it to TSC, just sign the book and list the amount.

I take it to the county recycle center.

Walmart and the auto parts stores like advance auto and auto zone take it free.

I don't generate that much oil, maybe a bit more now that I am servicing my brother in laws stuff in addition to mine. So far I have used all I can accumulate burning trash piles. We have had a lot of trees die in the last year so lots of brush to burn.
Recycle centers take all they can get because they can sell it back to the refineries. Shell was selling re-refined oil for a while, don't know if they still are? They quoted it as being better than the first run stuff.

any place that sells it usually takes it.

I have a 275 gallon tote in the corner of my shop that I dump my used oil in. It gets filled up every year or two and I call the recycling company and they come pump it out for free. They said if I could guarantee them a minimum of 100 gallons a month or something like that they would pay me for the oil but I don't use that much and am content with them just picking it up.

How times have changed. Back when I was much younger, we went thru a LOT of oil in various equipment, trucks, vehicles, etc. We had drums of used oil. We would just spread it out on the gravel road in front of our place for dust control.

I take mine back to either Advance Auto or Autozone. I just carry it to around behind the counter (or ask them) and pour it into their tank.

Diesel substitute, not biodiesel, black diesel fuel from motor oil dewatering filters

I get 10 gallons of oil every time I change it in my semi . Although Our local recycling palnt takes up to 10 1 gallon containers at a time , I have considered trying out the $200+ kit and trying it out in my TC30 . Have a 300 gallon tank that I keep a minimum of 100 gallons of dyed diesel in year around for the trator , so I would just add the " Black " diesel to regular diesel at a 50% mix in a 5 gallon jug and try it out .
