The rear scoop is designed to be pulled forward for digging. You should be able to maintain a constant depth of cut after setting the toplink and position control.

Switch it around to back into loose piles of gravel, dirt, manure, etc. I don't have one, but it seems like it would work great as a carry-all implement, also.

I'm aware that prices vary regionally on a lot of things, but I paid $125 for mine new from the MF dealer here. It's not MF brand (not branded, just red). Reversible and pull a rope to dump. A hydraulic top link is very helpful to get the correct starting angle, and then level off at the desired cutting depth.
I was looking for something to transport loose dirt several hundred yards when I bought mine, as the box blade wasn't very efficient for that. While shopping at the MF dealer I saw the 1455v that I bought a couple of weeks later. Since getting the loader I haven't used the dirt scoop very much, but it's still around for "special" needs similar to this. Our land is flat (western edge of LA delta) but occasionally I find a need for a shallow ditch to move surface standing water.
I also agree with other posts regarding the sod cutter. If price is no object that might be the way to go.
