I have looked in my owners manual and have called my dealer. My dealer had no idea what the weight of the oil was that goes in the front axel on my 3120. My front axle was close to a quart low so I added some amsoil 75w90 synthetic EP gear oil. Is this what it takes or is it a 75w140 or what /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Garrabo,

I think the information you are looking for is contained in the very beginning of the Service Transmission section of the manual.

The oil to use is JD Hy-Gard. Use the Low Viscosity version if operation will be below 0 degrees F. It is the same oil used in the ehydro transmision. I am very surprised the dealer could not tell you what oil to use.

I just picked up a gallon container yesterday for the MFWD on my 4310. The dealer told me the filler cap design on the tractor also designates the type of fluid required. The 75W90 gear oil may be too viscous. You might have to drain, flush and refill with Hy-Gard.

Jeff

FYI. Since you had used an amsoil gear oil, I did find during my search yesterday for equivalent oils to JD that amsoil makes an oil that meets JD's J20C and J20D standards stated in the JD tractor manual. The amsoil product is Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil SAE 5W-30 (ATH).

Like the other man said, it should tell you in the front of the service transmission section, of the owners manual. Like on my 4110 it uses 80W-90, some use the transmission oil. So you need to be sure, before you use the wrong thing.

all it says is J20D and J20C, I dont know what that means. I cant believe it does not give a specific weight. The guy I spoke with at the dealer said the 75-90 would be OK but I dont hold that in high regard. I will try another dealer to be sure. I would like to use an amsoil product. I'll refrain from operation until I know for sure.
Thanks

Well, these are specific JD oil specs, so if you call the JD dealer and ask what the weight is for JD20C, he should be able to read it off the Hy-Gard container. It's probably on the web site somewhere too, I imagine.

Or you could just buy Hy-Gard oil which meets the J20C spec (I believe D is winter grade) from the dealer and not worry about it.

Here's the web page:
Hy-Gard

A quick search of the depth of knowledge on TBN itself, showed J20C turned up alot. Here is one thread where alternatives were discussed.

Garrabo,

I don't know if your manual is different but the on-line manual for the 3120 contains this information:

Transmission and Hydraulic Oil
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Use recommended oil only. Do not use engine oil or "Type F" automatic transmission fluid.

Choose oil viscosity based on the expected air temperature range during the period between oil changes.

John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD transmission/hydraulic fluid is recommended. John Deere HY-GARD transmission/hydraulic fluid may also be used for temperatures above -18° C (0° F).

Other oils may be used if they meet John Deere standard JDM J20C or J20D.

This is located at the very beginning of the section tiltled Service Transmission. There is also a temperature range chart. There are only 2 oil weights. The standard Hy-Gard or the Low Viscosity Hy-Gard which I think corresponds to the J20C and J20D designations. I only know this because I came across the same thing on Saturday for my 4310. I called the dealer and asked him if he had J20C or J20D oil. His response was "Uh?". He asked me what it was for and then told me Hy-Gard. I looked at the manual again and saw that it was spelled out at the beginning of the section but the MFWD section only states J20C or J20D. No reference is made to Hy-Gard.

The dealer should be responsible for flushing and refilling your MFWD with the proper fluid since he gave you incorrect information.

I like that. Charge people for dumb answers. I wonder if this was adopted as a standard if it would improve the quality of service that consumers have been receiving in recent years.

I have yet to have satisfactory results from a deere dealer in Georgia. It seems they are owned by white collar investors that have the money to buy in but are vacuous themselves by nature and the employees they hire /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I got it figured out. Amsoil cross referenced it for me. Its the same oil that goes in the tranny not the 75w90 the dealer told me would be ok. Does anyone suspect I would have any damage or concern. I added 3/4 of a quart of 75w90 to the axle to top it off and ran it about an hour. Its actually is a 5-30 fluid that goes in the axle. its the same lube that goes in the tranny. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
