Ha - had a fellow who worked with me - born & raised in Minot, ND. We were in Anchorage, at the time. He would say - yes, it got cold in Minot. But the dam wind was the very worse. Standing outside at -20F and the wind blowing so hard you could barely stand up.

I often wondered - why was he out in those weather conditions. He wasn't raised on a farm.

Lol. Well, honestly, those conditions are so common here in the winter time, we just call that "Tuesday". So while no one really relishes being out in it, you can't stay indoors every minute. Even walking across a grocery store parking lot brings visions of Jack London's "Call of the Wild" (without the wildlife of course).

A case of perspective I guess.

I can remember my brother telling me stories back in the early 80's when he was stationed at Fairchild AFB (I was stationed on Okinawa) about how cold it was out on the flightline (working on B-52's), and I remember thinking to myself "No way would I want that".

Now here I sit, a guy born and raised in the desert of AZ, living in ND, and living it every winter.

Go figure...

Minot, ND. is frequently much colder in Winter than Anchorage.
Different story in Fairbanks though.

Maybe I'm missing something important, but I would prefer the tractor had sat outside in Alaska rather than Arizona.

I think I agree,... but neither is a good option.

It would be interesting to see which is more severe in terms of weather exposure. Fairbank痴 nearly 24 hrs of sunlight in the summer and cold starting during the winter vs. Arizona痴 climate. I wonder what痴 behind the reasoning for the aircaft graveyards in Arizona.

That is an easy answer!
No humidity= no corrosion.

I was astounded to see vehicles driving around Arizona with body damage, exposed steel and no rust.

But aircraft have an exterior skin, so that is a bit different. Only the landing gear may be exposd to the sun.

Arizona has very low humidity most of the year, except during late summer monsoon season. Then it is surprisingly "high" for maybe a month or so. Then back to very low humidity. The low humidity is great for keeping corrosion to minimum. But the high heat, and unless covered, direct sunlight are murder on soft parts like rubber, vinyl, plastic, etc. So back in my car restoration hobby days, we always said buy your metal (body, frame, engine, trans) from AZ, and your soft parts (interior, gaskets, door seals) from "back east".

Aircraft storage is big in AZ because most of the high dollar parts will stay in remarkably good condition with minimal storage efforts.

Of course the direct sunlight will destroy your paint job, but hey, what do you want, everything?

I just don't see the problem with a tractor sitting outside. All of ours have always sat outside and I can't see that it has done them any harm. Some damage to rubber parts, but that's easily dealt with. The sun hardens the paint, but you can always wash and polish it up if that's your thing. More importantly is to wash the mud off each day.... if your land has mud, ours doesn't. About the worst thing here is parking under a tree and getting tree sap.

To the OP. Tractors tend to be built in one long a factory run and then warehoused to be sold over the life of the model - which is often 5, 7 to 10 years depending on popularity there might be anothe run...and might not. The tractor "year" is the year it is sold, not the year it was made. Unlike cars. Serial number tells you the year it was made and the and model run for any changes.

Mechanically, I don't see why here should be much difference between a L47 that has sat on a dealers lot for 3 years and one that has sat at the manufacturer's shipping depot for that same time.
