I'd skip the dozer and find someone with a skidder. They're built for the conditions SMM has and it will come with 200+yards of cable. Around here the skidder's the retrieval vehicle of choice. I've seen guys use a skidder to retrieve stuck dozers, D4's and D6's. An articulated skidder is much more manuverable than a dozer.

If the ground is really soft and muddy a LGP D4D like mine w/ winch would have no trouble pulling it out,a smaller dozer would too, w/20000# pull something always moves.
I've got a 12,000# hydro winch (about 18"x40") that could be chained to bucket or tree and any lawn mower/CUT could power it.

In all fairness to my dealer, he's 5 hours away. And it wasn't my dealer who decided to trade with me, it was me who made the decision to trade with a dealer that far away. He has contacted me, provided a name of someone he thought might be helpful, and I have spoke with his technician by phone. His technician gave me a test to perform and concluded it was the clutch. And again, in all fairness, I'm sure it's hard to diagnose a problem without being in front of the actual problem. However, somehow the 'problem' turned into an offer to trade mine in on a new one. That, I was told would 'solve all my problems'.
I guess in a way it would have, but, somehow that's not the way I chose to solve it.
Tractor is out now. Stay tuned and i'll send pics.

by the way, if any of you guys have any of those water guns that kids use to play with...the 'Uzi' types.....don't throw them away. They might come in handy some day to squirt hyrdraulic flud with.

Hey SmokyMtnMan, thanks for posting the pictures of the trail you have to go up. That second picture really shows what your up against.

Some of the posts have reccomended that you turn the tractor around and try to back up the hill so that the pickup end of the pump would be down hill in the oil rather than uphill in the case where the oil is shallow. Of course, this assumes that the pump pickup is closer to the engine and not the rearend. After reading your posts, I am inclined to agree that this is indeed the case here. Perhaps someone reading this has access to a cutaway picture or drawing of exactly where the pump and its pickup tube are located. I have searched without success for something like this to try and nail down this issue, but my net skills are only barely adequate for basic surfing /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

John Miller seems to be able to find all kinds of things about tractors, maybe he can help us?, if not does anybody out there know of a tractor version of a Chiltons manual for this tractor?

All else failing, even though the hill is steep, (and use your judgment here) it seems to me that you might be able to very slowly turn the tractor around and try to back up the hill. If you can, you can lower the bucket on the FEL and drag it for extra stability.

If as I believe, that there is not enough oil over the pickup on the pump, reversing up the hill should rectify this problem and allow you to use all the power you need to back up that trail.

Again you will have to use your judgement as you are there and I am probably 600 to 700 miles away!!

used a 'come-along' attached to trees with a strap, 4 log chains, when i ran out of cable on the 'come-along", I used bucket to pull forward, got it at a spot that wasn't quite as steep, used the 'uzi' water gun and managed maybe a quart of fluid in, cranked her up, eased in low range, barely any throttle, got over some wheel ruts, couple of root mounds, suddenly it lunged forward...i gave it all i had...came right out.
Seems to be running fine, all i've tried works, no smells, no leaks, fluid shows just a 'hair' above mark on stick.
Kawasaki Mule decided he wanted to wait until tomorrow when there was daylight.
but he's coming.
more to say on this later...got to get mud and brairs off of me
