NY_Yankees_Fan --10 inches so far! You weenie..we only have like 5 to 6 here to far. We WERE to have 12 - 18 but I think the super doplar 10,000 was/is wrong. I was looking forward to plowing the streets with the BX!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

so ur saying a 15w40 flows the same and has same viscocity as a 5w30 ah? so what the frail do they have viscocity #'s for then if it flows the same as a 5w at low temp it'd be a 5w40.. hmm..

Well I use Amsoil (100% synthetic oil) and at their site it has Series 3000 5w-30 Pour Point (-60) and 15w40 HDD&M is Pour Point of (-47).

So they are within 20% of eachother. Pretty close in my book. It is never that cold anyways. Plus the pumping temp which is more import is -27 min when using 15w-40. I bet that is better then most regular 5w-30's out there.

To close you can go to their site and get the same #'s or just use whichever you need in your climate. Unless you live in ALaska the 5w-30 is a waste.

There are my "frail" #'s. Yippee

So ur saying a 15w40 will flow and protect a engine better at -30 degrees than at 0w-30??? hmmmm... ur about 10yrs ago. most oil companys are now focusing on 0w-20 0w-30 oils not high resistance products. That protect much better than high visc. products.

I never stated that anything about protection just an additive package or fighting acids and some metals and freeze/ pump tempos.

I said in my last post that the freeze temp of 15w-40 is –47 and 5w30 is –60 in Amsoil case. To find pumping temp is like another 20 degree added. S0 it is –27 and –40 respectfully. This is for a true flow temp. As far as protection is concerned, I do not know if you mean the four ball test results or like protection from acids. If you mean the protecting the engine, the 15w40 is BETTER as stated on their website. If you mean from acids (TBN) they are both really close at or around 12.2 TBN

This is not 10-year old data or thinking. It is today and it works like a charm. Many oil manufactures are going 5w-30 and 0-30 for one reason only….called emissions.

This data is using Amsoil’s data sheets since I use it since 1994 (started in gas engines). I am not comparing other oil since it will not be “apple to apple” comparison.

Lastly, feel free to use whatever oil you want. I am not an oil expert just know what I have used in almost 10 years using there stuff. Not the best oil either but it works perfect in my application and again, there is no need for a 5w-30 since the #'s do not show anything great and wonderful in 5w-30 (as posted on the web)

Thanks for this information. It's about time for me to order some more oil, and I will be getting the 15w-40. No sense paying 61% more for so little difference.

KubotaBling- Well then, what is the precise reasons then..hmm? Post the data and not some little short post. Well oil expert lets see it.

Again if you re-read my post I said there were other good oils out there. Again read it. It came down to oil weight and not a brand war. I wanted to compare the same product since that is a good comparison to start with.

If you do not like Amsoil then do not use it. It is not brain washing rather then thinking ahead rather then behind. It is amazing that you feel that way and can’t think outside the box mentality. With you thinking we would still be using horse carriages and rotary phones. That is what separates the men from the boys (thinking outside the box)

Lastly, do you really think I care if you use it? I am not a dealer only a customer. I just stated what I used per the post at hand. Please reply to the thread with answers or help rather then posting childish replies.

Amsoil makes a great product, too bad it is not on store shelves. In every independent test I have ever seen the facts don't stack up tp Amsoils advertizing page--tests. In the 4 ball test in a recent motorcycle oil test the Mobil 1, Amsoil and I forget the other came out equal, the Mobil 1 had the highest flash point and the least reduction in viscosity over time, the Amsoil had a better additive package for long oil change intervals, buffers and stuff like that. The tests were incomplete in that they obviously did not cover a full range from each maker. They were all great oils and the differences were inconsequential. The drive towards oils like 0W-20 and such as that is strictly EPA mileage driven. Since most wear on an engine occurs during cold start (a cold start is any start the engine is not already warm) an oil that flows faster and is engineered to provide lubrication under that condition as quickly as possible is a good thing. Such oils are 15W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40 are a good range. I think the 0W-20 might be Okay in Minnesota in the winter but it is a little light for Arizona in the summer.
Why does Amsoil spend so much time comparing themselves to Mobil 1. They make a great products with several lines not covered by Mobil but their stuff is impossible to find. I am not going to buy my oil out of the trunk of someones car. Put it in a store and I will consider it. J
