Thanks for the link. I had forgotten about them and they are located in the same building where I buy bearings......

tractor supply is your best bet, isnt the enfield one not too far from you? i was just there a few days ago and stocked up my bolt cabinet too, cant beat the prices, but be aware that they seem to be on the low end or possibly below the spec of grade 5 and 8 even tho they are marked as such, if i have a real critical application i dont use tractor supply bolts, they just seem a little weak compared to the same grade of other sources, but for most stuff they are great, i just bolted my whole kawasaki mule cab with tsc bolts, got a pound worth for less than i coulda bought 5 bolts at the hardware store localy

Does TSC, or anyone else sell "assortments" of fasteners? I don't need 100 each or a pound each of this or that. What I need is a baker's dozen each of, say bronze wood screws in various sizes, same for S/S panhead machine screws, etc. I have not had any luck online finding good assortment boxes of useful sizes.

Thanks for input...

Just a couple of places to think about, if you have the time and inclination to scrounge. I was at an auction at a bankrupt fab plant a while back and the whole hardware room sold for $300 or $400. Most of the bins were full and the stuff was 1/4" and maybe smaller to 1" and some larger. There was also a large selection of iron pipe and fittings, ball valves and such ( the place built industrial ovens and kilns). There were also refrigerators and microwaves in there. Another place to look is your friendly local scrapyard. They get barrels of nuts and bolts. The selection can be limited but you would be amazed at what you can accumulate over a period of time. Then again, maybe not. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like a bargain on the hardware room. I would love to get into a deal like that. I have passed on many loads of scrap iron, no use for it, but now that I am thinking a welder might be fun...........and 3pt hitch stuff seems easy enough, and hooks on my bucket seems cool, a couple of logging chains.............I will bid on the next lot I see.

I believe that my TSC here has a bulk type assortment of some sizes and blister packs of anything else. Packs make keeping them neat if you have pegboard or bins for them. I usually buy an assortment by the pound of bolts, washers, and nuts. Also use lots of drywall screws and they have the 2.5 pound boxes of those in just the right sizes. I like that you can make up your own assortment.

I second the bankruptcy deal. A few years ago, a Payless Cashway store was having a bankruptcy sale, and I got several boxes of bolts and nuts for 70-90% off of original retail. The only downside was that I got some really bizarre sizes that I probably won't ever deplete. Need any 1/4" x 6"??

I have also done the $4 for a can deal at a farm auction and spent 2 hours sorting the can and putting them in my bin.

Another option would be a Company called Imperail out of Green Bay Wisconsin (http://www.imperialinc.com/). I have bought from them for many years. They are priced somewhere in the middle when I have compared them. The one thing a like over other companies of this type is there sales staff is not commissioned so you don't get stuff you don't need. Just another thought...Happy Motoring

thats the great part about TSCs bolt selection, if you wanna buy one bolt or 300, its still just done by the pound, they dont have to be the same size or anything, just have to keep the grades seperated (they are color coded) you could fill a bag with one of each size bolt that they had in that particular grade and take it to the register and they would weigh it and charge you per pound, doesnt matter what size they are

Tractor Supply for sure. When I need to restock, I will usually buy $25-$35 dollars worth of bolts, nut and washer. It is amazing how much you can get for that amount of money. I know that at my local hardware or tractor dealer, the same amount of bolts would run well over a $100.
