Stay clear of the Ford 6.0 and 6.4, I have had both and they cost me a pile of money in repairs puking coolant, oil coolers, EGR valves, injectors, roasting pistons, International engines, the only one that was any good was the 7.3.. I guess the new 6.7 Ford engines are as good as any other..

It is funny that you say that. I see lots of those engines for sale with 100k miles. Probably selling just before all the problems show up. Thanks

They are ready to explode for sure..

It was a disaster for me, I did actually have a 6.0 that ran pretty well for me, the trick was to delete the EGR and weld the cooler shut, if I drove it like a normal person the turbo would get gummed up and then you got trouble. So, I pounding the tar out of it most of time and the foolish thing ran pretty good, then I bought and newer model year with the square EGR cooler, BIG MISTAKE..

Then I didn't torture myself enough, I bought a 6.4 twin turbo that hydro locked and roasted a piston. I really couldn't justify buying another truck and my towing days are gone so I decided to give Ford more of my money and buy a new Taurus SHO twin turbo AWD Interceptor which I love..

I just came across an 85 International s1700 diesel dump d170 engine. It has no rust except for the dump body. Price is $2500 which is cheap. It is also local. Any input or advice on buying this truck? Any known problems with this model?

Probably not where you are...

Had the chance to pick up a like new 32,000 gvw International Dump for 5k... 2002 model.

Only problem is to use it where I am would require a 16k repower as the engine did not meet emission tier going into effect and the phase in was ending...

I would also need a CDL with insurance...

No cdl or emissions nonsense. Are you familiar with this model?

My only International Experience is with 2003 International 4700 single axle dump with a 33,000 gvw and a 7 yard box. (I just looked it up)

Friend bought it new and was very happy with it... no complaints...

Sorry, I can't help with the other models...

I started a thread on it back in 2014...

The husband and wife owner operators had a nice little business... what a pro when it came to homesite excavation...

In 2003 he special order the dump and two years before bought his TLB... sadly, he closed up shop due to both truck and backhoe becoming non-compliant... his equipment was the best maintained I had ever seen... simply could not justify the expense to comply so he shut it all down.

One of my buddies bought a truck from CA and it cost nearly 3k to get it shipped to TN. I’m sure a dump truck would cost more. Otherwise I’d love to have that truck for 5k.
