The stump grinder does pretty well. It will indeed take out a 2-4" stump in a few minutes. It does take some patience with larger stumps...think of it kind of like using a router...I use the steering to kind of swing it back and forth, then lower it a bit, and repeat until the stump has disappeared into the ground. With a stump grinder (vs. a backhoe) you end up leaving some stump, but it's underground, so decide which way you'd rather go...

I don't much about the 418 model but for the brush hog I think the 422 or 425 would be a better choice especially if you have any hills. If I were you I would take a trip to Tazewell and try out the different ones. If you want to see one in action there are several owners of 422's here in western Pa. which I am sure you could arrange to take a test drive.

I have used the stump grinder on my 422 to grind hardwood stumps up to 14 inches, on smaller stumps, especially softwood, it can remove them quickly. On the larger stumps, it does take small routing cuts, but it nevers takes more than one hour. 2 to 4 inches stumps can be done in minutes.
I usually charge between $50 and $100 per stump and I have already paid for my grinder several times.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the helpful replies. I think I've narrowed my choice down to a 422 with rock bucket and teeth, brushhog, snow plow/grader, and mini hoe. If I end up waiting until next year, I think I'll go with a 425.

After reading some more, I decided to go with a mini hoe instead of the stump grinder. Since I'm dealing with small enough stumps, I think the hoe will end up being more versatile. I guess it might take longer, but the hoe will be useful for much more.

The only other question left is what tires. I see this seems to be a pretty good debate on another thread, so I'll keep watching. I'll end up doing most of my work in the woods, where there are plenty of loose leaves, rocks, etc, and I have to cross a couple of tiny streams that don't run all year, so I am considering bar tires.

Thanks again,
Jeff
