Am I the only one that actually enjoys greasing? And I don't mean using gloves, fancy lock and lube things or cordless grease guns. I mean actually get the fingers full of grease to put on the splines of the PTO shaft with the good ol'manual grease gun. :D

Cannot say I enjoy the greasy paws but it does not bother me. Using my 40+ year old Lincoln pistol grip grease gun is so easy I see no reason to spend money on a cordless. Just something else to need only to find the battery is down and I'm out where there is no way to charge it or have a spare handy, plus the extra weight. Besides doing it by hand tells me a lot about the condition of the item being greased by how much pressure it take to pump and I can put in tiny amounts when needed to keep from pushing it past seals/boots. I have seen it for years people pumping in grease until it pushes out past the seal/boot or splits them thinking more is better. I can see grease so I have done a good job mentality. Over greasing is just as bad as not enough.

After years of servicing heavy equipment I have learned one, many two, things about greasing. Just list me as old school and happy with it.

I'm with John0829 on the manual grease gun. I have both a pistol grip and a lever operated gun. When I need a free hand I use the pistol grip. When I need more pressure, I use the one with the long lever.

I have a LandPride cutter now, and I am selling it because there is one grease fitting that cannot be reached without dismantling the drive train. Is there a brand of rotary cutter that has all the grease fittings accessible?

You must be talking about the fitting next to the slip clutch on the U-joint. It is a pain in the butt. I keep swearing I'm going to switch it out to a 90 degree fitting, but just haven't done it. All the other fittings are okay to get to, but I feel your pain.

I guess i just need to figure out what size fitting to replace the current one with. I think a 90 degree fitting will make greasing easier.

I have a Land Pride rotary cutter also, on the outer plastic safety shield there are some plastic screws, turn them and you can slide the safety shield back and access the grease fitting.

I have one PTO shaft - Wallenstein chipper. The zerks are easily accessed with the "standard" tip. Don't even need my needle tip. Like others have said - can't see getting rid of a cutter because one zerk is difficult access. Get at it and instal an angled zerk.

How about posting a photo showing what the problem problem is?

DieselBound,

Take a utility knife and cut a half moon on each bell end of the plastic guard about the size of a quarter so you can get at the fitting. Make a little larger if you need to. Stick a large screw driver in the yoke to rotate the shaft into position.
