which tractor????

Richard, I don't know what prices are like over there, and I don't even know what the exchange rate is. In other words, I have no idea about the prices./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I had a '95 B7100 before trading up to the '99 B2710. The 7100 is a fine little tractor, but no power steering, and a bit narrow so it's not the most stable tractor you could get. Any of the tractors you've listed should be good if they've been properly maintained and not abused too badly. Are you going to get a front end loader? To me, that's the most used implement, and you'll much prefer 4WD and power steering to go with it, although it's not absolutely necessary. I got a lot done in 400+ hours with the B7100 and a B1630C front end loader, 4' brush hog (rotary cutter), 40" tiller, and 4' box blade.

Welcome to the Forum/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Good luck in your search for a tractor, sounds like you're well on your way! Had to mention the Kubota B-7100 is one gutsy little tractor. Several of us here have a history with them/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. I'll never sell it even thou I bought a larger tractor later.

Bird,
you can work out the prices in USD as £1 is equal to $1.45 USD if thats of any use to you, and the prices new are about $700 more new in the UK than they are in America, roughly.

Hi Richard

Welcome to the group and welcome to a fellow Brit. I am originally from Sheffield but moved up to the Highlands near Inverness seven years ago, although we do visit Sheffield at least twice a year.

I am in the same position as you in that I am looking for my first compact tractor. The guys on the forum are a wealth of invaluable information and I have learned a lot just from looking at posts and occasionally asking questions myself.

I have had a very brief ride on a Kubota B2150 HSD with FEL and it took me hours to wipe the smile from my face - us men and our toys, eh? Well that convinced me what I needed for my situation.

We only have just over one acre /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif but like your site it is quite steep and also very rocky. I think the advise from MarkV and Bird regarding FEL, 4 wheel drive and power steering is spot on. My criteria also adds a minimum of 20 HP to that based on a chat with a dealer near Chorley (the one where I tried the B2150, and no he wasn't trying to sell me that one as it had already been sold and was on it's way to France so no reason to doubt him).

I have not had much sucess yet in finding a suitable one as the dealers don't get used compacts in very often. I would personally prefer to buy from a dealer near to home as I feel I can go back if there are any problems.

Lots of luck in your search and keep us posted.

Andrew.

glad to see your post, be prepared for a lot of good information; the experience on this board is overwhelming.
i had the great pleasure of spending 3 years in the UK in the late 60's, touring Scotland once. Made a return visit in 98. Still have friends in Woodbridge and Huddersfield. Great place.

An update to my previous post - I have just had a friend of mine who owns tractors around and he said that in his opinion I will need a tractor with 24hp+ which will make the hill np whatsoever, I hope this is the case. This therefore narrows it down a little, so with this added information, is there any other help you can provide me with, in relation to "which tractor". Thanks for all the help so far it really has been a great suprise to receive so many replies, and very, very valuble indeed in my search, thanks all!!!

Richard, I don't know whether he was talking about engine hp or PTO hp, but I've got the B2710 (27 engine and 20 PTO hp) and sure like it. The little BX2200 doesn't have that much hp and the front end loader won't pick up as much, but it has the advantage of being wide and low for stability on slopes. If you have a dealer nearby, I'd visit and look at as many of the B series models as possible to see which one "feels" best to you. And of course, if you're like a lot of us, you have to also consider what the budget will stand./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
