Why are deck over trailers (usually) only rated for 10k?

I highly doubt that 2" ball coupler (or the ball itself) is rated anywhere near 15K#. If either component is rated for less, hauling more presents a liability problem in the event of failure.

What do you think the pintle part of my truck hitch is comprised of? A ball (2 5/16" I think) and a clamp over top to close the loop.

The other trailer may be a 2 5/16" and not 2", but still. The style of hitch should not indicate whether the trailer is a bumper pull or not heavy duty.

The highest rated 2" ball I have seen is around 7,500lb. I have seen pintle hitches rated at 100,000lb. The ball hitch pintle combo you are talking about is designed to be handy for people moving light trailers with different hitch styles. A hitch doesn't always dictate the strength of a trailer but when a trailer has a 2" ball you know it can't be good for much more than 7,500 lb and when you see a trailer with a heavy pintle ring it just might be stout enough for a bull dozer.

This is the hitch I have on my pickup. It is overkill for sure but it is what I have. 30-Ton Pintle Hook (PH30) | Welcome to Buyers Products Company Note it is rated for 60k gross and 15k tongue.

This is similar to what you said you have - HITCH,COMBINATION,RECEIVER MOUNT,6TON,2-5/1 (RM62516) | Welcome to Buyers Products Company note it is only rated for 12,000 lb gross and 2,000 lb tongue.

Why does the connection matter? The equipment trailers I use for work can carry up to 15K, one is a 2" ball hitch, one is a pintle. Dont think one being a pintle automatically makes it heavier duty.

Care to explain? I was simply pointing out to another poster that if you see 10K trailers, and one has a pintle and one with a ball that does not automatically make one more heavy duty than the other.

I think the concern is you think a 15k trailer can be pulled with a 2" ball. We all make mistakes when we post but if you sale trailers the weight limit on hitch setups should be common knowledge for you.

My contractor has a heavy duty trailer rated for 12,000 lbs with a 2" ball

He uses this 12k rated ball

I corrected myself in a later post, it is a 2 5/16" ball.

Also, its "sell" not "sale".
