Why bombs are armed on the flight line

Technically, the clip is inserted into the magazine on the Garand. Both terms suffer correct and incorrect usage. MikeD74T

Yep!

Same with say.. an SKS in stock configuration.. internal fixed magazine fed with a stripepr clip.

:D:D:D I don't think Marine DI's consult Merriam-Webster for THEIR definition of "gun". :D

Well.. that's part of the problem! ;)

Well...yeah...kinda...

A "stripper clip" is actually slang for what is properly termed a "charger".

I know, I know, this is getting waaaay out of hand. I'll drink a nice tall glass of shut the heck up now.

This is an article about the Phalanx on Military News Military History Military PHOTO VIDEO.

Surface Forces : Phalanx Gets Sharp Eyes

The website has interesting information. Much of which will never be seen on the regular media outlets. Sometimes I see stories on the major outlets but it had been on Strategy Page previous. One of the guys on the site has been writing military/history related books for years. I have been reading his stuff for a decade or more.

Anywho the link is about the hardware and software changes to the Phalanx that allows it to shoot down mortars, artillery and rockets. Its been covering the Green Zone in Bagdad for awhile. There has been a later upgrade that allows the Phalanx to take out small fast boats.

I'd challange you to find the word 'charger' in any number of curio / relic gun sites... May be the correct term.. but stripper clip has come into the public domain to the point that it may now also be a, defacto 'correct' term. Kinda like 'kleenex/tissue' 'rolerblades/inline skates' bush hog/bushhog.. etc.

I hang out on alotta of those sites and i bet you'd get more questions asking about/what is a charger.. vs stripper clip.

The garand was a good example though, as the clip stays internal to the mag till it is ejected on the last round.. with that nice 'cling' sound.. thus letting the enemy know you are now OOA... great design... :(

I've seen at least a few other guns that use a in-place ammo clip to feed their box mag, not including all the ones that use the ..ahem.. charger.. as you mention.. like broom handle mausers.. etc..steyr 1912's.. etc..

Soundguy,
I was really just giving you a hard time, but I wasn't making the name up. You're right, stripper clip is what everyone calls it these days. I liked your analogies though, took some thought on your part. Good on ya!

I don't know about curio's and relics, but chargers have been around since 1889:

Here are some links that use the word "charger":

About mid page on this link: The Gun Zone -- Primer on Clips and Magazines

French Infantry Weapons, 1940

(WO/1989/001128) A CHARGER CLIP

Again, wasn't trying to bunch up anyone's drawers.

Curio and relic covers just about anything 50ys old and older concerning firearms.. ( even NFA and antique ).

I'm not arguing with you on the term charger.. it is correct.... I'm saying it is nearly obsolete in common usage and nomenclature.

Nothing bunched up.. just that so many here seemed overwhelmingly concerned about minutia.. vs actually discussing the original topics , ;) ( nothing like stopping a gun thread to point out the finer facts that a word was used incorrectly... IE.. derailing the conversation ) I'm not picking on you.. it happens day in and day out here... seems like so much 'starched shirt' 'school' talk going on... and not enough greasy-hands kicked back working with tractors talk... :)

Amen brother. I've heard enough starched shirts on here myself. Sometimes I think I don't fit in here. I hardly post up tractor stuff anymore, when I do have a question, it gets answered quickly, so I guess that alone pays for my time here. I spend most of my time these days over on a couple of shooters forums.

Maybe I should post up a video of me shooting off my tractor, of course with the ROPS up and safety belt on, then put it in the safety section. That's a great idea. hmmmm.
