Why do some stores now ask for your phone number...

I always give my office private line number. When they call and get M*********d Mortuaries, and ask for any name, I ask them the date of death. This gets them flustered, and the number is deleted from the data base. The most difficult one was the mortgage company that somehow got the number. They are a little dense in India, and just didn't understand the concept of death.

I wonder if you give out your correct number, and you are on the no-call list, if that gives them leave to call you anyway. I bet it does. Maybe some activist state Attorney General would like to pursue this one.

Well, that's actually what I am sort of wondering. I've been on a "no call" list for several years now. It's worked rather well. I still get a few calls, but not too many. I'm wondering if you voluntarily give them your number, you then have in a way asked them to call? Could this be their way of getting around the "no call" list??

Any time you buy something from a company, you are 'giving' them the 'right' to call you for telemarketing purposes:

From the Do Not Call Registry FAQs:
By purchasing something from the company, you established a business relationship with the company. As a result, even if you put your number on the National Do Not Call Registry, that company may call you for up to 18 months after your last purchase or delivery from it, or your last payment to it, unless you ask the company not to call again. In that case, the company must honor your request not to call.

At Best Buy, they already have your phone number in their system, they ask for your name and your phone number comes up.

I have a state sales tax agricultural exemption in Texas. Both Home Depot and Harbor Freight store this information on line and access it via my phone number, which I give them to get the exemption on purchases with them.

I will shop at home depot until they give me the phone # question.
I will turn around and say I have more shopping to do, thats when I fill the basket from every ilse to the top & go thru the checkout again.

When they pop the question the second time, I walk out !

Now if everyone did this, their little game would end soon:D

and spend my .02 else where

If you really want to give them a hard time, forget every aisle, just go to plumbing, and grab several of every sch 40 fitting the have. And since half of them aren't barcoded, 1/3 of them won't scan, and the cashier has no idea what they are it only will take an hour to do one basket. Then walkout on the phone number question.

I just give my phone number though. I have a phone line, it just doesnt have any ringing phones attached to it. I am not sure why we have that phone line, but sometimes some things are just best not discussed further when the wife insists.

My first inclination was to just leave the item and leave the store.
I purchased an Echo trimmer for the lovely Mrs_Bob a year or two ago. I was at a small shop that was locally owned and specialized in quality brands. They asked for my phone number. I said I was paying cash. They said they couldn't ring it up without my phone number.

I put my money back into my wallet, turned around and started for the door. They figured out how to sell it to me without my phone number.

At large chain type stores I tell them my number is unlisted. If they insist I either leave with all the stuff still sitting on their counter, or I tell them it is 1-(234) 567-8900 and I make sure they understand that the area code is 234! Some of them are smart enough to catch on, some are just idiots. But I make it a point to make it their problem.
