I own one JD of a fleet of seven Kubotas and Ford/ NH It is a great tractor, but the weak link is the Yanmar engine, which will not compete with the Kubotas/ Ford/NH's for smoothness. I like the tractor, but a manual shift with the slightest lug wll cause the engine to surge, or gallop! JD told me it's normal! It is my "daily driver" with no glowing and instant start. It's the only shortcoming on the 2000 790, with the 91.3 in. Yanmar Engine! My JD790 maybe a fluke with that trait----No hate replies please! I had a falling out with the dealer also, and will never go back! A prima-donna mentality! I didn't get what I paid for, and can live with the gallop at low RPM! This maybe on my 790 only? And I'm not bashing the JD's, which are quality tractors for more $$$$$ generally!!

I personally like Yanmar engines. I owned a YM 1700 for 14 years and pulled a 5' finish mower with it. Never a lick of trouble out of that unit. It was a 2 cylinder so it was lounder and not as smooth as my current 1720. I HOPE that my Shibaura 3 cylinder is as bulletproof as that 2 cylinder Yanmar was. It should be.

I assume that your 790 is an older unit with the 2 cylinder engine. No, they are not that smooth. But I, along with thousands of others, can attest for their durability and toughness.

That's the 2nd issue of fuel i see being addressed about jd in comparison to other manufacturers. What's the general thought on this? Seems JD is using more fuel per unit hp / work.. etc... at least based on a few posts i see.

In so far as I know, Deeres havn't been known for their fuel economy since the late stages of the 2-cylinder era. For many years, the 730 diesel held most of the Nebraska test fuel economy records.(HP hrs per gallon) It was bumped by the 150 Massey diesel. Hard to compare anything to the economy of those little Perkins diesels.

And Exxon needs to hand out free 2440 Deeres. Mine keeps a few oil wells running overtime on its own.

Ok then.. then that explains it a bit more. it's not a new thing.. it's just a long term.. 'fact' (for lack of a better word.)

By the way.. for the greenbloods out there.. this isn't a slam on JD....just an observation.. I was just noticing a few similar comments on this and other boards about similar sized jd's using more per-unit fuel than other colors of tractors.. As for fuel economy.. most of my tractors are old gassers.. and have well.. low economy.. etc.. compared to work they do..

I was just thinkin' how silly a blue or orange tractor would look with a yellow seat.

Hey!!! Blue and yellow... That combination is pretty close to the colors of my alma mater! Hmm. And aren't those the Rams' colors? And yellow and orange are complimentary colors! Why would they look silly together??? Hey, red and yellow go together, too! It's like yellow goes with everything!

Of course, lots of primary colors in there!

No, it's the 3 cylinder/ 30 hp. 2000 JD 790 and surging develops with the slightest lug in confining spaces, which is annoying. Time permitting, I may mess with some adjustments on it?? The dealer said it is normal? I have a 2000 1720 also, manual shift, and the engine is extremely smooth producing it's rated 28 hp. for field work and bushhogging. BEWARE OF RODENTS getting into your electrical wires behind the instrument panel on your 1720!! The engine is also very smooth at low RPM. My 1500 Ford 2 cylinder is typical to others, which requires more RPM to smooth out?

I think I'd change fuel filter, and change out fuel.. run strong power service in new tank, and also change / service air filter, and see where that gets you.. The 3cyl yanmars should run pretty smooth. perhaps you have an injector that is not firing correctly. Might be time to loosen some injectort lines one at a time and see if cracking one produces a much lower effect than the other two....

Soundguy,

How's your 7610 on fuel?

She burns 5g in 2hr pulling a 15' mower at full rated pto speed. Seems to be little fuel difference if I am clipping blacktops on the pasture vs knocking down 2' of weeds and grass.

Incedentally.. she burns the same amount in just about 3hrs or so, pulling a 10' mower, doinf the same chore... Ironically.. my ford 5000 also burns about the same fuel on that 10' mower, again.. doing the same job.. etc... ( never had the 15' mower on the 5000 as it only has 1 remote.. so can't tell what fuel would do.. however.. i think that 15' mower might be a real workout for the 5000// making it burn a bit more fuel... that's just speculation.... 15' is alot to ask of her I would think)

Thanx for the info, I changed the fuel filter and serviced the air filter recently. I think you have me headed in the right direction with an injector! It does idle smooth with no load?
