Why dont you try the other green paint that is a lot less expensive. Have you looked at a Montana. I looked at several brands when I went looking for a new playtoy ( I mean tractor) I went to a show in Tulsa, Oklahoma that had several brands there. I had looked at a Montana with a local dealer before going to the show. I went to all the brands there and told them I wanted a new tractor and this is what the Montana was going to cost. I asked them to compare prices. The John Deere representative really wanted to sell me a tractor. He called me the monday after the show and gave me the best price he could possibly give it was about 8000.00 more than the montana. I have a Montana 4940C That is a 49 horse 4 wheel drive With a cab. It comes stock with two remotes. The engine is made by mitsubishi unless you get a 70 horse model which uses a john deere engine. If you look on the montana discussion group you will see the lengths that montana has gone to to provide customer service.

I agree, a $1000 difference could be justified or rationalized, but the premium I've seen seems a bit much. Maybe you're right and I need to do some more shopping.

The colour factor may come into play in different types of tractor use areas.

In farming areas using large equipment check out colours. There may be a dearth of what is considered popular in areas that have a predominance of tractors under 100 HP.

Chip,
You could come to New England and overpay for any color you like. After reading this board 5 years or so I think we in NE pay more than most of the country.

When I brought my little BX I would have been happy to over only one manufacturer trying to gouge me - but they all were.

Deere makes good equipment and has an icon status with would-be wanna-be farmers/ranchers. Nothing wrong with that. They do a great job marketing the name by selling anything they can get their hands on. Sorta like Harley. Nothing wrong with that either. It's still about demand and BRANDING a product line. Why do you think BMW and Mercedes can get more for thier cars than Chevy or Ford? A lot of parts are common between all of the car manufacturers. It's the PERCEIVED QUALITY of the product and the BRANDING of the product.

Another thing that helps Deere is their history. Been around a long time and has not changed hands like most companies. Almost all of the other major brands have changed ownership multiple times and it's harder to get BRANDED as easy. If you are in business with the same company name and logo for years on end it's easier.

Around here there are not as many used Deeres as AC's, Fords, or Internationals. I guess it's because the major dealers in our area in the 50's-80's were AC, Ford, and IH. They still bring top dollar at auctions but AC's do also. Parts are not a problem with any of the major brands.

The JD was 6k higher than the NH. After trying both out I prefer the blueand that is what I have. I also purchased a new JD 4110, I do like their lawn tractor better but it did cost more. A local farmer has 4 large fwd JDs and just purchased a comparable NH. Guess what is getting the most hours ? The NH has a quieter cab, air suspension, drives like a car, and uses 20% less fuel. Most of us buy the make with the best dealer service but I think Blue has come a long way in quality and market share.

You gotta give it to Deere, as a company Marketing is without a doubt the thing that they do better than anyone else. I've heard that they employ over 250 people in their marketing dept. Marketing is very expensive, to sell a good tractor and sell themselves the way that they do they must charge a premium.

That's the 2nd issue of fuel i see being addressed about jd in comparison to other manufacturers. What's the general thought on this? Seems JD is using more fuel per unit hp / work.. etc... at least based on a few posts i see.

All good points. I know this subject can bring forth quite a bit of emotion, but that's good. I don't believe that anyone can actually prove that any of the "major" brands is any more or less reliable over the long haul. There are obvious advantages/disadvantages when comparing any two given tractors. I truly believe that companies tweak the models so as not to go "head to head" with each other. In other words, they make it tough to make a true apples to apples comparison.

I've looked at John Deere 03, 05, and 4x20 tractors. The Boomer series from NH and Kubota MX500, M5040, and L5030. Like I said, each machine has it's own merits/advantages/disadvantages over the others. I'm still trying to test drive each and find the right one for my next 30 years.

We all wish money was not an issue, but it has to factor in. Especially when you're not an everyday tractor user. That's what is making my decision so tough.

I own one JD of a fleet of seven Kubotas and Ford/ NH It is a great tractor, but the weak link is the Yanmar engine, which will not compete with the Kubotas/ Ford/NH's for smoothness. I like the tractor, but a manual shift with the slightest lug wll cause the engine to surge, or gallop! JD told me it's normal! It is my "daily driver" with no glowing and instant start. It's the only shortcoming on the 2000 790, with the 91.3 in. Yanmar Engine! My JD790 maybe a fluke with that trait----No hate replies please! I had a falling out with the dealer also, and will never go back! A prima-donna mentality! I didn't get what I paid for, and can live with the gallop at low RPM! This maybe on my 790 only? And I'm not bashing the JD's, which are quality tractors for more $$$$$ generally!!

I was just thinkin' how silly a blue or orange tractor would look with a yellow seat.
