Why isn't there a horn on the BX tractors?

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

I put a small car horn on my Bolens Tractor.
Used a door bell switch mounted in the dash for the horn button.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

Commercial and industrial tractors and other heavy equipment work in areas where there is a high density of other workers. Having horns and those backup beeper things makes logical sense in such an environment. The original question, however, was about whether it is strange that BXs do not have horns. A BX is not designed for commercial/industrial use. A ROPS and a seatbelt are reasonable safety features for a subCUT, but I don't think a horn is something that I personally would need or use. I don't take the BX on the highway and I do not allow family members to get close to the machine while it is running. As a piece of standard equipment, it would simply increase the price for an item I would not use.

I realize that other people might use the BX under circumstances different than mine, so having a horn as an option, or as an aftermarket add-on accessory does seem reasonable.

I put a horn on my Bolens several years ago.
One of the first things I missed on the BX23 was a horn.

( My owners manual for the L3130 shows a horn as an accessory.

Id like a horn, it would be neat.

Actually, I wonder why there isn't a backup alarm on tractors????

It depends on the target market. For example my L48 is
wired for a horn but the horn itself by default is not installed.
I suppose one could buy the Kubota part at some hysterical
cost. I just installed one I had lying around.

Same is true on this model for the back up alarm though
a switch is required to sense when the HST pedal is
actuated in reverse.

An electric OOHGAH horn was one of the first things I custom installed on all of our four tractors when new.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

I've had horns on a couple of tractors, including my current subcompact. I use it often - like to alert the son to stop daydreaming & get out of the way when we're working or to move the shovel or 2x, to alert the kids to look over so I can tell them to get back inside while mowing, etc. Seems no one can ever hear me yelling to them when the engine is running, even if it is idling, but they always hear the horn.

Only complaint about the horn is the button contacts get covered with real fine dust which renders it inoperable, so I have to pull the button out and clean it with the compressor nozzle regularly to get it working again. One of these days, I'm going to make a dustproof boot for it.

I find myself looking for the non-existent horn button on my neighbor's BX22 often when I'm using it too, as I've grown accustomed to having a horn on my machine.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

For a good (dust- and waterproof enough) horn button, I'd try the kill switch off of a 1974 (or so) Evinrude/Johnson 25 HP outboard. They're pretty simple, very durable, and probably reasonably priced.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

I will definately be installing a horn on my BX2230. I load dirt/rock/debris/ into a tractor drawn wagon and/or pick up....I beep the horn when finished...that's how the driver knows he's full and safe to pull away. Very common practice with big loaders that translates perfectly to our smaller FEL equiped tractors.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

Why doesn't my $40K L39 have a horn? It's even got a horn button on the dash that functions....yet no horn connected to the other end /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I guess I didn't pay for that option.

Re: Why isn\'t there a horn on the BX tractors?

Jim, the horn button is connected to two white electrical lines that come out of the wiring harness on the right hand side of the engine adjacent to the fuel injection pump kinda below the fuel tank. If you look over there on the wiring harness, you will see it. All you have to do is plug in a horn to those two outlets.

I ran a 12V OHH-GAH horn direct off the battery and installed a water proof marine toggle switch adjacent to the steering wheel for laughs, it is real loud too.

See if you can find those two wires (they are wrapped up in black electrical tape) and hook up a horn.
