Rods that are wet do need at least 550* to dry out.You will find that good rod ovens have a thermostat that is adjustable from 150f to 550f. I am suggesting low heat to keep dry rods dry, not to dry out wet rods. If you buy a box of rods and only need a few for your project, then a homemade oven with a light bulb should work fine to keep the rods dry.

I place my wet rods on top of the wood stove this wk if I plan a project for next wk. Top of my stove probably gets to 800*F. Rods stay on the stove all wk and the rods weld like new

I'm liking the wood stove plan, got some older 5/32 7018 that's just been sitting in the 50# box in the garage for years, think I'll see if that'll perk it up. I'll run some test beads as is, then after a few days in the (newish) oven, compared to a couple nights on top of the wood stove.

Been watching CL for quite a while looking for an actual rod oven, finally today I called on one (about 190 miles round trip) -

Just so you know, a hot stove wont cure rusty rods. I seldom throw rods away. If they get rusty, I use them to weld cupholders or something less critical.

Muddstopper, thanks for the heads up - I have no intention of using the old (really old) 7018 for anything critical, just an experiment. The new (to me) keeper will be for just that, not letting new LoHy get funky on me... Steve

Oh. Haha. Sorry. Off-gassing. Don't know if it was just the initial heating the first day or??? Didn't figure there would be any health benefits from inhaling in a closed room, so I moved it to a more ventilated area. ---smart***mode on---

Back when I became certified as a welder the rod used was 7018 and coupons were overhead and vertical...

7018 was the rod for most of the jobs because of strength and ductility...
