I think it's in the film, "O brother, where are thou?" an old tractor is operating a small drop-in rock crusher with its belt. I see online that if you have a 100+hp tractor, you can buy, at enormous cost, a much larger PTO rock crusher or a field rock crusher that crushes rocks in a field, but all the smaller units are really, really small and cater to prospectors, and are mostly small engine or electrically operated.
It would be great to have a PTO jaw type rock crusher that could break medium sized shale stones like we have here in the Catskills by the milions, but there doesn't seem to such an animal..It would probably have be operated by its own hydraulics like some of the wood chippers are, for safety, but it would seem to be something that could be made fairly inexpensively.. I've seen some home made units in Youtube videos..

I agree, it seems like a great machine for folks wanting to crush their own rock for a driveway.

Edit: Get the little rocks you want and rid of the big rocks you don't!
Kill two rocks with one stone? No, wait. I'll see myself out now :)

I don't know. All I have here is basaltic lava - one of the harder rock forms known. I think a low cost picker might be an easier choice.

There's no practical crusher for personal use. Even a rake/picker that works is an expensive tool unless one owns alot of land.

Look up mbmmllc on YouTube. The guy builds all sizes of jaw crushers for mining and recycling uses. Email him and I'm sure he could put a PTO shaft on one of them.

So, I just ordered a 8" x 12" jaw crusher from MBMM. They said they are working on a PTO crusher. I would think for us tractor guys a PTO crusher would be great. I'd have bought one.

If it were run off a PTO, it would make quick work of your PTO clutches, or worse….

A rock crusher isn’t a cheap piece of equipment and requires a lot of maintenance. You won’t make many tons per hour either. Just buying a load of gravel would look cheap compared to trying to DIY it.

Go to alibaba.com and search for "rock crusher." 7000+ hits.

That's where I go when I'm in a whimsical mood.

Are you talking soil tiller/crushers or portable/towable rock crushing plants?

Either way your crusher needs a lot of mass or it will beat itself to death in no time.

I saw the Chinese one. Still motor driven and the guy had to do a ton of work to it before he could use it.

It would seem that it would be a benefit of having one's tractor free to move rock while the crusher is operating, unless one has several tractors.

Impact was mentioned. Perhaps rather than PTO driven, one should get a loader with high flow hydraulics and use it hydraulic pump driven.

So......I watched that Chinese rock crusher video. I guess it would be OK if you wanted to crush rock - as a hobby.

I have a mile long gravel driveway. Local contractor estimated 200 to 250 cu yds of gravel to resurface my driveway. Around 15 to 20 dump truck loads.

If I had sufficient rock to be crushed - crushed rock eight hours per day - don't think I would live long enough to "make" 200 cu yds.

How many have actually witnessed a multiple crushing/screening operation. It is a massively huge/noisy/expensive operation.

For $5000 you can get a whole lot of gravel. Of all sizes, shapes, grades, types - etc, etc.

Yeah, I thought about that a lot before I bought one.
I hate rocks and I need gravel for my drive, but you're right, I will never produce enough gravel for the driveway.

steve tyn don't give up just keep crushing rock a little at
