Winch from rear end

In the first photo in my post 37 above, that is what they did, but it is hard to see.

Bruce

Now I see it. Darn - thought I had an original idea!

Re Post 39,
Would go the way you describe using a shaft & sprockets to bring the cable drum on centre, but would lock the diff and use a similar set up as described in the previous
post(38) to activate the drum.

Note the single tooth dog "clutch" on the winch drum shown in post 37.

Must be about impossible to disengage under load.

the old stickwood loaders that phased out when i was a kid used rearends and sowm even used the brake drum andpart of the hub with a hydraulic swivel to lock the cable in. the one that was common for the cable loader on the bunk trucks was a car axle on a frame and a section of the axle tube cut out ans a winch drum put in place then the live axle run throught it then welded to the live axle. the pto drove the pinion gear and the side that wasnt cut on would lock to engge the drum. when the load was hoisted you pulled a master cylinder plumbed into the the other brake drum on the spool side.
heres one from a flotating truck axle this was the most common to lift a side loader. this one was on a stick wooder. it didnt have a hold on it I posted these pics on FF http://www.forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=114011

I can not open any of the forester forum links.

The jeep has the idea.

Sigh.... you do convert energy to heat by using the break and letting it slip... you do end up with a fast speed once the break is locked. Think of it as a variable speed vs fixed. It allows the slack to be pulled gently, and the load to be accelerated directly proportional to the master cylinder load or resistance to a lever on a S cam air break type. To do the same with the PTO clutch will kill the clutch in short order (but once the spider gear is welded what other option than complicated fabrication).

The most obvious reason to use the axle is the ready made simplicity, economy, ruggedness and repairable frictions.

Heat?

Compare hauling down a 2 ton vehicle from 60 feet per second to a stop compared to pulling the same resistance (might be worst case) at 6 feet per second over 30 seconds.

Heat dissipation may not be an issue (brake fade?)
