Windows 10

Lots of people, including a son-in-law in the computer business, are upset about the "privacy" issue with Windows 10. So the son-in-law has been recommending against upgrading to Windows 10. However, he sent me the following email just an hour ago:

Just wanted to let you know that today Microsoft released an Update that adds the intrusive privacy telemetry to all version(s) of Windows 7 and Windows 8 too.

For me, personally, Windows 10 is so much better than anything I've used the last few years that, so far, I'm glad I updated a laptop, and bought a new notebook that came with Windows 10.

Son-in-law found it very difficult to get rid of all the data gathering stuff in Windows 10, so he's reverted back to Windows 7 and shut off all updates for his home computers.

YES!! There are three "updates" involved, KB3068708, KB3075249, and KB3080149. You don't want any of these installed on your computer!

What are some of the privacy issues with the updates?

I understand that updates are automatic with Windows 10. It doesn't tell you updates are available and let you decide whether to accept them or not; it just downloads and installs them. And that's obviously the case. I left my computer in "sleep" mode last night and this morning it says "updates installed".

Had to upgrade because the hard drive went out on my notebook (2nd time).

Bought a Windows 10 Dell Inspiron because my wife's Inspiron on Windows 7 has been so good. Good price at Best Buy.

Office 2003 no long installs on Windows 10. Had to buy Office Business (to get Outlook) 2013 for $210. Otherwise, it's Office365 at $70/yr. Could have gotten Publisher with Office 365 but only need it for volunteer work. Had the volunteer organization buy me Publisher 2013 for $110.

My old printer wouldn't work, and there's no Windows 10 driver for it. Had to buy a new printer.

I like Windows 10 overall, but some minor things sometimes drive me up a tree to figure out how to do. I installed the old classic menus on my Office with a $29.50 add-on. The new Office menus since Office 2003 that had the classic menus sometimes drive me up a tree in figuring out how to do something simple.

Unfortunately my WIN7 laptop died so I needed to replace. (they just don,t like coffee)*
I went with a preloaded version of WIN10 from Cosco as my area is not hi speed.
Must say so far so good with few glitches and even with my limited knowledge I have been able to work around or find the cure.
Thank goodness that I had a Clickfree automatic back up system so I lost little or no saved data.

* my first glitches, where is the apostrophe, and the question symbols, all I get are French accents when I use the alt or shift key.

I had Windows 8, it came with the new computer. Did not like Windows 8. Windows 10 came along and I thought, it can't be any worse than 8. WRONG! Windows 10 is without question the worst OS I have ever used. My advice is to delay, as long as possible, any upgrade to 10 or better yet wait for Windows 11, 12, 13 or 14. Did I mention that I DO NOT like Windows 10?

I can see you are not a fan, but what is it about Win10 that you dislike? I find I dislike change generally when first upgrading operating systems but soon adapt. I'm still using Win7.

Windows10 Home does not allow you to change how updates are applied. Windows10 Pro does.

Windows10 can be made to look like Windows 7. I've never understood the visceral hatred some people have about Windows. It's an operating system. If you don't like it, use a different one. There are alternatives, e.g., OSX, Linux, to name two.

How is antivirus defense handled in Win10. I find that issue has been the biggest hassle I face going back to Win3. Is the in house Microsoft free antivirus adequate?

You must have never used Windows ME. And I can't imagine anyone thinking 10 is worse than 8. But I guess it's just personal preference. I like 10 so far.
