Windows Media Player 10 Problem--maybe?

LMTC,
Yes, the cost of a dual layer is prohibitive. I burned a 7.2GB movie compressed to a regular 4.7GB disc and uncompressed to an 8.7GB disc as a comparison. I couldn't really see any difference in picture quality so the method of compression and 4.7GB disc's wins

6-7GB movies in 15min. is outstanding! I have never been able to get that kind of performance. I'll need to give DVD Fab a try and see how it works.

Good luck getting your performance back!

Regards,
Duber

Duber,
I was getting close to that kind of performance from Shrink as well....this dual core processor thingee has been fast. Fab has decoded some things Shrink choked on. Let's speak hypothetically and say that (hypothetically) I burn 3-5 full length DVDs weekly. For over a year. I have had app. 2 dozen Shrink would not backup, but only one Fab wouldn't do. Similar times, though Fab seems a few minutes faster.

LMTC,

I wonder if one of your processors has been disabled or is idle. I'm just thinking out loud. I haven't played around with a dual core machine yet to know how they work...... Can one side be varied offline while the other continues to run?

I don't know...and I'm not sure how to check something like that. Memory seems intact, at least per task manager. Interestingly, task manager shows processing about 65% utilized now when copying a DVD....I don't recall specifically what it used to show, but my vague recollection is that it was less. I know I used to work on spreadsheets and a database while it copied with no noticeable slowdown....not so now.

One last guess... maybe an update to your antivirus or spyware software? Sometimes they happen behind the scenes and you don't know there was an upgrade. I had a pop up blocker application a year or so ago that updated and then used up to 50% of the CPU cycles for no apparent reason. Slowed everything down to a crawl until I finally dumped it.

Keep us posted if you figure it out!
