Winter Coming

This is what my driveway looked like this morning... first dusting.

I'll be clearing snow with a Bobcat S185 Turbo, High Flow and a 73" Erskine ES2400 blower on 1 mile of road. Annual snowfall of 500". My first year doing it myself. I'm somewhere between giggity and horrified.

Let me get this straight--- that was THIS morning the 30th of August, 2010?

hmmmm...

Think he's at 9,000' elevation or something like that ...

That pic just sent cold chill up the spine..upper 90's next 3 days here than Earl arrives.

That snow looks awful good to me. Much better than this 85' stuff the last 3 days with more of the same tomorrow. Second to fall, winter is my favorite time of year. My 9 foot Fisher looks sad up in the woods, wouldn't even smile.

Three winters ago - our first in north Idaho - we had record snowfall. I had a Kubota, no cab, with a FEL and back blade for a 1/2 mile gravel driveway plus other areas. I'd get home from work at 6pm and plow 'till 9pm, while it was snowing, wearing what ski-type clothing I had. This happened more or less twice a week for months. Ran out of room to plow, spent a lot of bucket time pushing the banks back.

I learned a back blade and FEL was not optimal for that much plowing. But...everyone said it was an unusual winter, so I figured next year (two winters ago) would be milder. Guess what - another heavy winter, same drill.

Enough - last summer I bought an old F250 with a plow, also a blower for the tractor. And last winter - you guessed it - a very mild winter, didn't need to plow once. But I figured the truck and blower did their job, the drive was clear of snow...although I was looking forward to being in the truck - a heated cab while plowing!

I kinda hope the farmers almanac is wrong. And according to the local lore - squirrel activity and so on - all the folks around here are talking a long wet winter. Bring it on, I'm ready.

They are predicting a colder winter with less snow. Fine with me. I prefer cold to wet snow. Last Dec 9 we had a snow that took down about two dozen trees. The wettest ever in the 34 years I've been here.

I have one for big snow and one for small snows. I don't bother with the blower unless it is over 2 inches. More than half our snows are under 2 inches and The blade is nicer to use in the wind.

It depends on how long they live next to you. If 30 years from now you are still plowing the snow, I would say they got the better end of the deal. Of course if you are like me, you would probably plow it anyway. Can you show us the pictures of the special mount for your blade?

Yep i will take some pictures when i get a chance

Okay Cyril technically it falls here every year but It rarely sticks and when it does it's in such trace amounts that it's not possible to shovel it. :)

Now if only there was a way to plow the rain off the roads. :-D

Since last winter was a really bad winter for snowfall for most areas in the US, I wondered how many people have changed their setup for snow removal for this year (tire chains, FEL, snowblower, etc). I also wonder how many of us will be disappointed if we hardly get any snow and can't really use our new toys. Please post pictures of your new setup.

I have the same setup as before, but I bought a new McCormick CT65U with 4WD (didn't buy for better snow removal just updated my tractor). Before I had a MF135 that I had this blade on and it worked pretty well. I know I will be disappointed if we don't get at least a couple pretty good snows for me to play I mean work with it. I also have chains for the front not shown in the picture.

Snow,
What snow, it's been in the upper 90s here in Maine for several days :(

We can all relax!!!!
National Weather Bureau and the Farmer's Almanac both predict a mild "warmer then usual" winter for most of the U.S. this year!!!!! Whew!!!

Wonder if tirechains.com will give me my money back?

While I think it's fun to read the Farmer's Amanac the only thing it can accurately forcast is that the buyer will have a few less dollars than he did before he bought it.

Last year I had got to the breaking point with the snow and bought a rear mount farmking snow blower. If I don't have to use it at all this year I will be happy.

BRING IT!

Yeah, I know...I was being facetious.

Last year everyone was prediciting a cold and snowy winter for us. It was about average as far as cold goes but virtually no snow. So if they're predicting less snow this year I'm hoping that they're wrong and we'll have more snow than usual. As dry as it has been around here this summer I am hoping that the year's precipitation falls as snow this year. I'd like to make a little extra money plowing this year and most importantly I'd like to put some miles on my snowmobile. My brand new last year 2010 Ski Doo MX Z X-RS has about 400 miles on it from last year, pathetic.

I hope it cools down up there soon. I am headed up the third week in October for a week to do some hare hunting with the beagles. It has been 90 degrees here in PA also. Can't wait for some cooler weather and hunting season.

ditto ... ordered a rear mounted Frontier 64" last week. Feeling more confident but I'm not about to taunt Mother Nature with "BRING IT!" :)

Got to agree with you about the rain on the roads.:D Were you around for the Dec '08 snow? Man it was nuts. When I think winter, I think rain and mud...not snow.
