Winter Storm of Feb 1-3

Anyone know if a Honda 2k watt generator would run a furnace?

Depends on the furnace, I had a EU2000 running my oil fired hot water furnace with 4 pumps, a fridge, a freezer and a couple lights running. No problems, it would rev up when a compressor kicked on but would idle right back down after. Amazing how it sipped the fuel. Hot air furnaces would be tougher, you just may need to run one heavy wattage item at a time.

I'm really not looking forward to this snow. It doesn't help that the Kubota has 2 blown hoses right now.

May be on to something. Up here in New England, I've been in several commercial buildings the last couple of weeks checking roofs and clearing roof drains, It's not really practical to try and remove snow from 10-20,000 sq ft roof.
These are steel framed roofs, some wide flange (I-beams) and some bar truss. These roofs have 2-3 feet of snow on them now, not the heaviest snow but there's this huge storm coming with rain and sleet. I'm sure these roofs are near their rated design capacity now. double the weight on them with rain and sleet and they will be well into there safety factors beyond their load ratings.

When rain falls on a snow covered flat roof, the vast majority of it never makes it to a drain, it's the perfect recipe for problems, from just leaks to worst case, collapse.

Things are definitely a changing...:D
This Global Warming is killing my pocketbook when the heating bill comes.

We will get what ever is left over after it exits your border. They are calling for 45 centimetres or 17.5 inches starting Wednesday and continuing into Thursday.. We live in a bit of a micro climate ballon. We have no snow to speak of. Go 5-10 miles inland and they have at least 8-10 inches. In the valley and other provinces they are recording 2 feet and more. We do have lots of ice which is a challenge to get around the property... and it is **** cold -15 celsius or 5 fahrenheit with wind chill getting into the minus fahrenheit zone.

Tractor hasn't failed to start but had some frozen hydraulic connectors after a freezing rain storm.

The nice thing is that there is not a lot of snow around my property and the ground is frozen so I have been in the woods doing some general clean-up of fallen trees - firewood for the next few years!

Tomorrow will be prep day; diesel, fresh gas for the generator, load up the wood box, locate shovels and place them in strategic areas and oil/grease the blower on the tractor.

Hopefully this one will blow by us like all the others. But since it is coming overland and not up the coast - Virginia, NY, Mass., Maine, we will probably get a huge drop.

Stay warm my friends!

I agree. This one is tracking entirely different from the earlier blasts that have spun up the east coast. This one is the classic, once a decade, continental, winter hurricane, type storm. Whew, whatever that means.:D

Well, those who have lived through these know what it means. Be prepared. With just a 50 mile wiggle of the eye, it can miss you. But, if it is hits your area, you will darn well get buried. We are all eyes on this one.

I just checked local conditions. -2.2 with 45mph North winds. Very little snow.

Freezing rain/sleet mix here in Branson, there are power outages in Rogersville, it is much colder just a few miles north, we are at 32 deg. hoping the temp will drop here soon to change over to snow, they are calling it the worst winter storm in 99 years. Who knows, but it predicted to get pretty cold wed. nite, with lows at -12 or lower, and then winds of 30 mph. Hard to say, but looks like a bad one.

Here in the Philippines, forcast is continued hot (90 degrees each day), possible drifting of sand on the South China Sea beaches. Don't have to deal with Virginia weather for another two weeks. Cold showers and warm drinks continue.

That hurts! Rub it in!

I have done my share of blowing snow off roofs in winter, not for the weight, but to install rooftop heat and a/c units. Crazy.

Was supposed to get 4" of snow but only got about 1":) There is some drifting but nothing major, Roads are snow covered but easily driveable. I guess we been lucky with the first wave of the storm and I hope that their projected 8-12" of snowfall tonight will also miss us. Hope that all of you that got alot of snow are all fine.:D
