woodmaxx flail mower?

Tommott - I have the same mower, it is new, less than two months old. I do like it but having few hours on it time will tell. Mine does have NSK bearings and new scraper idea as well. I had my Kubota dealer put rear hydraulics on to run the side to side option plus top and tilt for other things I use. Had some issues with the tilt bleeding off to fast due to the mowers weight almost matching the valves bleed down pressure? so they put a locking valve recommended here on TBN for the tilt connection that works well. I too thought of running mine off the loader control but wanting top and tilt as well, decided to go ahead and get all three remotes...I had to make some adjustments to the mower because, the cylinder hose fittings were hitting against the protective cover over the shaft connection on the mower end when sliding the mower L and R; no biggie but still required some mods there.. Mine came with the roller in the center so wanting the highest cut possible I lowered to the third hole or, the bottom. Also raised the side slider shoes up all the way due to scalping of my grass when turning and this helped a lot to prevent it. Still wishing it cut higher, I tilted the mowers front up using my top cylinder control but not that much to be gained in cut grass height, Now, and having the mower adjusted where I think it needs to be, everything works with ease so far....

With the NSK bearings and relocated scraper, it sounds like the Woodmaxx flail mower is a pretty nice mower at a pretty nice price.

Hi all,

and from what I've read the scraper has been re-positioned as well, the only two complaints I've come across reading up on them as much as possible here.

I'm curious what the conclusion is on the scraper - mine just seems to load up with clippings and prevent the roller from rolling after a while. I removed the scraper this spring and have not seen any down side but it must be there for some reason?

Wet grass clipping would load up pretty quickly without the scraper...guess you could space it out a bit.
Mine also loads up, but is pretty easy to clean with air or a pressure washer

Odd. I don't recall the roller on my Caroni (same as Roy's) ever loading up. I don't even remember if it has a scraper.

Great, I really appreciate the report. I'm curious as to how high of a cut you're able to set with your mower? One of the things I'd like to improve upon from my current cheap Betstco flail mower is better qaulity higher cut. I use my flail as the mower on my lawn and it's great 90% of the time but when I try to adjust the cut any more than 3" the cut performance falls off dramatically.

So far, the scraper on mine does not load up but then, it is dry out now...My two Sons own Kubota excavators with USA built flail mowers on the boom arms doing custom cutting; both have said they like this Woodmaxx and thinking it well built. They helped in getting mine set up on the tractor as well.

Well, cut height is an issue I think, maybe with all drum type mowers? I too have issues there and after setting my roller all the way down, I still get a shorter cut than I'd like; also the finish product is not as good a cut as when the roller was higher. Evidently the suction created by the roller and cutters is not as great with the roller set all the way down..My old pasture is not the best of condition having lots of weeds now so the mower will often leave those long stems uncut in places.

I've been satisfied with mine (FM78H). The only issue I've had was that the threaded gland nut on the hydraulic cylinder somehow backed out and i had to reassemble it. The manual is rather lacking in detail regarding how to setup the mower properly. It took me a little trial and error but it is working well for me now.

I find that same issue with about any instructions thee days; seems the manufacturers spend more on adding lawyer safety pages with signs, stickers etc "do's and don'ts" than all else...Guess we are all idiots but then, the government has been thinking that for years.

Hi all,

Looks like Woodmaxx has updated their site with another batch of flails coming in later this year......in green to match my tractor now as well. I'm tempted to put down a deposit for the 62" hydraulic offset model unless somebody can talk me out of one. Their site is now adverting the NSK bearings and from what I've read the scraper has been re-positioned as well, the only two complaints I've come across reading up on them as much as possible here.

I'm curious how folks who have the adjustable offset model are running their hydraulics. Does most everybody run them off of rear remotes? I kind of like the idea of running them off the loader controls. Perhaps off a third function control or even tied into the curl function ports for true left and right control/operation as this member has done....

Woodmaxx Flail Mower First Impressions - YouTube
When I built the hydraulics on my L3200 with the help of FitRite I had 3 spools. 1 on a lever & 2 on a joystick to match my TnT setup. It functioned nice & the joystick made the TnT move in line with the joystick. Despite how intuitive it was I'm not sure if you through the time & expense again. I did wait months to get FitRite TnT cylinders on the new L4060 though, which was worth it. Just went OEM for the valves without a nice joystick for TnT.

There are 3 OEM spools in my new L4060 & only 1 has the throw matching anything (toplink). In less than an hour of usage I'm a good chunk of the way to translating the lever throw to sidelink actuation with muscle memory despite the lever being 90 degrees off.

If you have rear remotes I'd use those. Short cheap hoses. Long hoses up to the front won't be cheap. Also, I move my loader a lot when mowing so I want to keep those hydraulics intact. I do usually dump the bucket though, so curl could be avalible.

I looked at Woodmaxx site today to check their flail mowers. I've focused on their 78H because of the significant offset with the hydraulic cylinder.

They claim full right offset at 57" right of center but I assume that is probably to outside of the mower housing? I'm curious how far right of center the actual end cutters are. One of my uses will be cutting around the edges of two ponds. Outside of my rear tires are 35" from center line of tractor.

Roy measured his Caroni for me and it would only cut about 12-13" outside my tires and I'm not getting that close to the edge.

The ones with hydraulic offset seem to offset much farther than ones that you move hitch?

My 62H offset is not what I expected, just not enough side to side. Sorry, I have not measured just how much beyond the tires but it ain't much at all. My Kubota L2501 is close to 59 inches outside to outside of rear industrial tires but can't mow my driveway sides due to the wheels/tires being to close to the ditch even with the offset all the way out. Ok for along the fences though, no ditch there and why I got the offset cylinder for the most part. I do like everything else about this mower after getting things adjusted properly.

Please send Powerscol a PM and ask him about his italian boom mounted flail mower, he also mows road ditch banks with it too.

I've already looked at those. Too high priced for mowing around ponds once or twice a year. Balance of my use is pastures and the 8-9 acres around the house at ranch.

I've looked at the Land Pride FM2584 and FM3188 but, over $6K and will only cut about 16" outside rear tires. I was hoping that they had more offset because both have CAT 1 / CAT 2 hitches so I could use with both 46 and 96 HP tractors. The Woodmaxx 78H is CAT 1 only and the 88H is CAT 2 only.

They can be used as a standard flail mower also so keep that in mind otherwise your looking at buying municipal surplus at auction.

I measured mine today, 57" offset from center of the top pin to the edge of the mower housing, and the blades cut about 1.5" in from outside of the end the end plate. I could likely get another 1"-1.5" offset out of my 3pt.

Hope this helps.
