Where do you start?

You start in your own back yard.
Grant,
I agree with your comments that the World needs to clean up this terrorist mess, not the US by itself.
My country's Priime Minister, has agreed to back the US and as expected most (the majority in any event) agree.
One of our historians thinks that the WTC event maybe of greater historical significants than the falling of the Berlin wall.
I agree.
With the World taking on terrorismt, it doesn't stand a chance and the WTC maybe the incentive to motivate the World.

Now for the part the American Politicians don't want you to think about.
You are still not safe and you will not be until you are properly secured and you rid the US of the terriorists on your soil.
A terriorist half way round the world can't hurt you.
The ones liviing in your country can and they can again today.
I know you need to blame someone that is understandible and I know evryone, including Canadians want to blow the hell out of some one/thing. But we must remain calm and dumping on your friends,"two of the terrorist came in from Canada" is counter productive. Yes, I agree Canada should not let such people into Canada, but its
US Custom's responsibility, not Canada's to stop them from entering the US.
Now for the part that most will not agree with.

We all must clean up our own house before we set out to blow up terrorists in another country.

Believe me, Canada will be there every step of the way and we will start by changing our imigration policies and start more deportations.

If we are going to do this lets do this right, secure our borders and deport the right people.

Just so you're not confused where I stand, It is at your side my fellow North Americans and as far as I'm concerned, the Rest of the World, if your not with us your against us.
Amen and God be with you in your time of need.

Re: Where do you start?

Woodstock, I will agree with you 100%. We DO need to clean up in our own country before moving on. Although I must say, that will be no short term project. Our governments work on the basis of our laws, so they will have to gather irrefutable evidence before making a move on the suspects legally. Of course, legally is the operative word. Doesn't mean they can't be made aware that everyone knows who and what they are, and that every move is being watched.

Uh oh. Just saw some film of Afghanistan. Looks like we can't bomb them to the stone age. They're already there. Basically, no manufacturing, massive drought, little communication, civil war. Man, that place is a mess. No wonder they're willing to come here and die. At least they get a couple of good years before the end.

We've gotta hit the money. Bin Laden is probably that country's biggest employer. "come to me" he says and they come. He feeds them, clothes them, houses them, "educates them" and sends them off to nice comfortable lives in the West. He's paying the Taliban for protection and they're using it to buy arms for the war. Take the money. Ferret out every company that Bin Laden owns around the world and snatch it, close it, flatten it, whatever. Snag every bank account, stock account, etc.

The Taliban won't be getting paid for protection anymore. Let them know that they'll have to support their war against the rebels on their own unless they send the B@#$@ out. Then find the leader of the rebels and make him an offer he can't refuse.

The WTC was hit because it was a big target, high profile. It is also an expensive target. Cost a lot to build. It will also cost a lot to clean up and rebuild again. The white house and camp David would have been cheaper. He's hit us in the pocket book. Seems like a good place to hit back. He can run and he can hide, but he can't carry a billion bucks around on his back.

US Response to Terrorism

I have read a lot of the posts here, and I am sure similar thoughts and sentiments have been expressed and argued on internet sites, in homes, schools, bars, churches and every workplace in this country. I agree with some assertions and disagree with others, as we all do. Yesterday, I received the following from my niece, a woman in her early thirties. Some years ago, her terrified father tracked down and bought kevlar body armor, and sent it to her in Budapest, because he found that she was riding darkened columns bearing relief supplies through the siege lines into Sarajevo. She is now in this country, and sent this to members of her family. I don't agree with her completely, and am skeptical that some of her recommendations can be accomplished. I am equally skeptical, however, that Bin Laden's cave can be located and hit with surgical military strikes:

Dear Family,

After listening to the news and receiving several emails to light a candle to show that " WE [AMERICANS] STAND UNITED - WE WILL NOT TOLERATE TERRORISM!," I wrote the attached. The idea of us standing united in INTOLERANCE - well, lets say it wasn't very inspiring for me. I would like to circulate an alternative, and this is a draft. I'd welcome your
input.

Love,
Heather

HOW TO PREVENT WAR, SAVE AMERICAN LIVES AND SAVE THE PEOPLE OF AFGHANISTAN

The United States actions so far appear prudent: secure, rescue, grieve, investigate, plan, budget. What comes next... act ... this brings cause for worry.

We cannot stop terror with terror. We should not answer killing with more killing. Cut off its head, and it will grow another one. They used knives and box cutters this time next time, they may just snap necks with their bare hands. If we wage war, there will certainly be more reprisals more Americans and world citizens (over 100 British citizens died in the WTC) will lose their lives and their loved ones.
The only way to stop terror is to change the hearts and minds of terrorists, and yes, those who harbor them. The following are suggestions for US action that would truly aim to curb terror of all kinds and would promote the spread of freedom and democracy. It could avert years of war and suffering in the United States and around the world.

There are already refugees streaming out of Afghanistan in fear. Do we want innocent people to live in fear of American/NATO power? Let us instead lend a helping hand to these people and give them the chance to speak. What do they think is the best way to end terrorism in their country? What is their vision for a free and peaceful Afghanistan? How
can we help them achieve it?

Step 1. Make the Taliban an Offer They Cannot Refuse:

1. Demand that the Taliban turn over ***** Bin Laden to an international criminal court.
2. Demand that the Taliban disarm and resign its leadership of Afghanistan.
3. Or: Offer the citizens of Afghanistan the opportunity to vote on it. (All citizens, including women, minorities, members of opposition).

Impossible? Try third party mediation perhaps by Pakistan, Iran, or Sudan. The alternative (US attack) would most certainly look grim.

Step 2. In exchange for complying with these demands, the US and its allies would do the following:

1. Establish and fund a transitional government in Afghanistan that would include representation from all major groups.
2. Establish a timeline for free and fair elections for a new government of Afghanistan.
3. Provide amnesty for leaders of Taliban who cooperate; establish commission similar to South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
4. Sponsor a major, long-term reconstruction of Afghanistan. (Use funds that would have been spent on military intervention.)

Step 3. Let Justice Prevail
1. Punish with Life, not Death. If guilty, sentence Bin Laden to life in prison, constantly exposed to video of the victims and survivors of his crimes. In this way, he may die with remorse and regret as an old man, rather than dying today as a martyr and hero.
2. Send terrorists to be tried and sentenced by an International court rather than a U.S. one.
This will bring the world together around ending terrorism, and may dispel the worries of Afghan and other Arab leaders who fear U.S. power. Any trial in the U.S. with potential for the death sentence would divide the world and Americans.

*****

Let us not be guided by spontaneous rage and anger into irreversible actions of retaliation.

It is our chance to demonstrate to the world the meaning of civilization the ability of people to look their enemies in the eye and offer peace and reconciliation. Let us seize this rare opportunity to change the world for the better through our positive actions. Now, more than ever, let the USA and NATO be guided by their belief in peace and freedom for all.

TbyNet listers:
Whether or not you agree with all of her approach, Heather has risked her life for her beliefs, which can not be more opposed to those of the terrorists. I'm betting on her and those like her.

Re: US Response to Terrorism

Charlie, Heather's ideas sound appealing. The only problem is that they won't work; they depend on someone talking folks like the Taliban into cooperating. In other words, that's what we've been trying to do, and now you see how successful it was.

She apparently still hasn't realized that some truly evil people exist in the world and no amount of "reasoning" is going to change them.

But, oh how I wish she were right!

Then find the leader of the rebels and make him an offer he can't refuse.

That may be a little hard at this time, Afghan commander Masood the strongest opponent to Taliban militia has died of injuries suffered from a suicide bombing, which occurred before the attack on the WTC. This is being reported by Azadi Afghan Radio.

KABUL, Sept 14 (AFP) - As hope dwindles for the survival of Afghan opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood, his followers will be mourning the loss of one of the most tenacious soldiers Afghanistan has known.

Re: Find the leader

I also read this morning a story that makes credible the notion that bin Laden was not responsible (at least directly). Apparently, his mode of operation is to train other "leaders" that then spread out around the world and start their own"operations". This is starting to look like a bunch of his "trainees" got together and did this one big operation without his involvement. So we don't have one leader to find in one place, but perhaps a dozen (dozens?) in as many places.

Re: Find the leader

Glueguy -

But if he trained these other "leaders" how can you possibly say he is not responsible? If I sit in the car while 3 others rob the bank you can bet I'm going to jail just the same.

Also, as I like to be as informed as possible, where did you see this story?

Re: Find the leader

Glueguy -

I retract my last post - Sorry! I re-read yours and saw your parenthesized 'not directly' responsible.

I should take my own advice and count to 10 before I let my fingers loose.
