He was happy.... I was happier.... The best kind of deal. Also, you gotta know this BIL. He spent most of his life trying to run a scam on anyone who'd take the bait. He had it coming.....

some of these lil old man or little old lady deals are great
I bought a 1943 dodge 1 ton truck with a grain box on it in 1975 with 1500 miles on it (that right hundred not thousand) the old farmer had 80 acres lived across the road from the elevator. I still have it its now got 56,000 on it I had to shave the head and put in a new head gasket sometime in the 90s other wise change the oil now and then and some tlc still a fantastic truck a flathead 6 with a 4 speed and a 3 speed brownlite behind it goes down the interstate loaded at 70 and gets 15 mpg a dream

then on the otherside bought a 69 chev impala with 10,000 miles on it in 1980 spent more on it in 3 years then buying a new one would have been

go for it on the tractor change fluids use it and expect to have to do a little work now and then and be pleasantly supprised when you dont have to

I have seen a 1997 model tractor with less than 600 hrs on it and it was used to feed the guys cows and baled hay with it. I see no problem with a tractor like that. We have a tractor that we have put 700 hrs on it in 9 years. we used it on our chopper and never unhooked it for 4 yrs. so there are some reasons that you may find somethings that do not have much use. If i were you i would buy that tractor.

So - here's the report based on the looking earlier today...
I made an offer - the family is "considering it".
Have some photos on the camera too... if it goes well I'll share.
It is a TC40D - 2000 model year... 5 hours (now listed as 6).

The pro's:
* It has been stored climate controlled for it's life
* Look new - with a layer of dust
* PTO, hydro, all seals appear to not leak and are in good shape
* Even the "dead" battery held a charge after it was run for a while

The cons:
* 10 years ago the rears were filled with CaCl - there is some rust on the inside of both wheels along the weld seam and there is signs of some leakage and rust along one bead line
* the Hi/Lo button on the bucket controls does not work
* front tires need air

I mean - really - what else can you say about a tractor that's 10 years old with only 5 hours on it. The dilemma now is my offer is "lower than they would like" - but here's my sticking point... With only 5 hours on it - it's so far away from having every been tested under warranty - that it almost seems, to me, less valuable than the exact same configuration with, say 300-400 hours on it where the "bugs" have been worked out. If there's an issue - you own it 100%.
I'm expecting this to roll this way - I'll get a call back tomorrow - after they call the tractor dealer guy I talked to last week to get his take... They will tell me they still think it's worth more because "the appraisal says so". And there will be a counter offer...
If we can negotiate $1K over my offer - you will see pics here tomorrow... If it's higher - then I'll let them keep my offer on the table as they fumble though a bunch of people (like the first guy they had on the hook) who can't get financing - or go to a tractor dealer and see how everyone is offering 0% for 60 months right now - and go new...
Have to say - seem like very nice people and very reasonable. I hope they get comfortable with my offer - which call in - I think was quite fair both ways.
Stay tuned if interested...

Ohh - and to everyone here who offered input and opinions - thanks, great community... you all do our species proud!

Figure on buying a set of rear rims & tires. I bet they're eaten alive inside. Full fluid changes, front set of tires, you've got it pretty well under control......

Yep, I agree with Builder, it sounds like that's what is needed.

Some cleaning of the Hi-low switch may put it back into operation.

Mmmm, I understand where you are about a "proven" machine BUT, I would prefer the 5 hour machine. First, any year 2000 machine is sold as is. A 300-400 hour machine may be "proven" but what are the chances that it was meticulously maintained? Pretty unlikely from what I've seen. Even with great maintenance, the 300+ hour machine will still have wear, it will not be a 5 hour machine.
I think that you are on the right track in going after this machine and I wish you luck in buying it!

* the Hi/Lo button on the bucket controls does not work

Did the switch on the fender work? It does the same thing as the joystick rabbit/turtle switch. If the fender switch worked, then you can simply remove the rubber boot at the bottom of the joystick and check that the rabbit/turtle switch connector is plugged in properly. It's on a pigtail just below the rubber boot. If the switch on the fender also does not work, it's probably a loose connector under the left-side operator's platform where it connects to a solenoid in the transmission.

A quick way to check the rabbit/turtle switch on the joystick is to look at the light in the fender switch. As long as the key is turned on, you should be able to switch between rabbit and turtle on the joystick and watch the light on the fender switch change also. You don't have to have the tractor running to test the rabbit/turtle switch. Also, whenever you turn the key off, the rabbit/turtle switch reverts to turtle the next time you turn the key on.

that series machine had two issues. 1st, the battery boiling over and acid getting pulled into the radiator, and 2nd, the Hydraulic lines use rubber hoses near the radiator that where prone to leaking.
