Would you buy an electric tractor?

Gasoline and diesel fuel engines can afford to waste energy. Batteries don稚 have any to spare. Using one motor and wasting energy with hydraulics isn稚 a good path to working with something that already offers a pitifully low energy storage.

Interesting. With electric systems one can have immediate on demand for any system (motive, hydraulic ) which allows for efficient use. Getting rid of the weight of a diesel engine and associated fuel will allow for lots of room for energy storage weight.

Wouldn't be suprised to see hydrogen tractors.

** The government drive to ethanol had more to do with corn farmers and cash than it did for the environment. Another case of lobbying and corrupt government distorting the market for corn and creating chaos for fuel systems. Better environment is needed badly... no diesel or gas soultion will address that need. Extracting and burning carbon has done a lot of damage. Given the age of most here..you have all felt the effects and can see the difference... certainly in Alabama you have.

Nope. Not one iota of negative "effects" of burning carbon in Alabama. All positive.

Ethanol was a fool "do something, anything, even if it makes things worse we have to look like we are doing something" solution. Just like masks.

In defense of diesel, the energy storage density is much greater than that of a battery+motor. 100 HP for an hour is lighter for diesel than electric.

Battery electric is practical today. Hydrogen is a fool's errand. Government likes it because there is so much wonderful complexity to regulate, subsidize and control! Is practically the same as the current petroleum industry. Regulate hydrogen producers! Distribution! "Gas stations!" Plus hydrogen consumes huge amounts of energy to produce, just like ethanol! Fuel cells are horribly expensive and delicate. So much for government to love!

Uh, if that was such a great idea then why not replace the wasteful hydraulic pump connected to diesel engine on conventional tractors with an alternator and electric servos in place of the hydraulic cylinders?

The answer is that any possible energy savings is lost in durability and operating expense. Hydraulic systems take a heck of a beating in filthy environments. As a result it makes a lot of sense to keep the hydraulic systems even on an electric tractor.
