Church is having a fundraiser to rebuild their church after the flooding in NC and Tenn end of last year.

Picture of the church when it was getting flooded.

In a round about way, I'm kind of connected to this church, although I've never attended there or even know the pastor there.

Thing is, the church is planning on rebuilding exactly in the same location where it was located at (yes, about 20 feet from the creek that was flooded).

I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I do have experience with creeks and rivers, and one general rule along with not buying a property with a easement is NEVER EVER build next to a creek or river unless you expect to kiss it goodby at some point.

Am I out of line thinking it's not the smartest idea to build in the same location right next to a creek? I wouldn't mind making a small donation, but I compare it to someone panhandling for food. I understand that the money I donate may not be used for food, but it's the reason why you give. That said, I'm not talking about a couple of bucks you could expect the person to buy booze with.

Certainly not if they built at the same location. They didn't have insurance ?
The reasoning to build in the same spot is apparently it was a "500 year flood".

It also gets interesting because apparently some people in Tennessee believe that contrails of planes are being used to control the weather, and apparently the government caused the flooding in Eastern Tennessee because there is lithium in mountains and they (I guess the government) is apparently trying to get their hands on it.

Apparently contrails are so bad that the governor of Tennessee has outlawed them over the state...

It was kind of interesting when I was there the other week and people were pointing out that you can see contrails pretty much all the time. I didn't want to ask why if it is now a law that they can't be over Tennessee why we saw a couple.

Apparently some in NC feel the same way...

If you have doubt its for a reason, listen to your instinct, you have them for a reason... and no you are not out of line for thinking as such... but you what is right for you....

There is folks around my area that had their house burnt down, they didn't have insurance. There was a fund raiser for them, my though when I saw that was sorry but the money I have left if for my house insurance... I could / would help for their immediate need but won't help for them to built a other house when you made a choice to not insure your house. As much as this statement is harsh we have to live with the consequence of our actions if not we will do it again...

yeah I heard that... I didn't look into it because it sound like a wacky conspiracy to me but what do I know... there is definitely something fishy about this area, no news coverage, no help ect... there should be proof there is lithium is these mountains has this been confirm ?

Absolutely no donation to rebuild .

If they rebuild there they need to elevate and build a good foundation.

500 year flood? 100 year flood? I’m a land surveyor and live within an hour of the Mississippi River. After various flood events I ran elevations all over the place, mainly for people that were getting money to elevate their homes. There have been at least 2 and maybe 3 events that were 100 year floods in a period of about 25 years.

Those flood events are all theoretical and after a major event they realize they aren’t something you can really count on.

Just curious, would the "no donate" people be swayed if the Church was being rebuilt with the foundation being reinforced and the bottom floor being several feet above what was the previous level of the building?
Churches flooding without insurance is not a new problem, as Blue Creek Baptist Church in Keaton Beach (address Perry, Fl) was destroyed by the same hurricane (i think) and it is being rebuilt. Will it get flooded again, doubtful, but possible. I believe the premium for annual insurance including flood was $250,000.00! That small Church and their members need a place to worship, and that is what they have, so they are scraping together the money to try to rebuild.
My Church's Disaster Relief team did some work at that site, and later took up a collection to send them.
Good luck to the rebuilds, may the buildings stand forever!

Yes. However, there are enough places local to me that any donation I might consider is staying here.

I would not donate if they intend to rebuild at the same location shown in those pictures.

Standard property insurance doesn't cover flood damage. Most didn't have flood insurance because it hasn't flooded in the mountains in about 100 years.

The issue for many of these communities is how they are going to rebuild when their roads and water supply systems flooded away. In some instances, the roads were located next to streams that shifted their course to being where the roads were. With homes, businesses, roads, water supply systems destroyed and no insurance to cover the damage, its hard to see how these communities are going to recover.

We had a “500 year flood” here in my little town in September 2022. It was epic. I lost a lot of large square bale hay that was stacked in places that have never flooded. Lost a lot of round bale feed hay that were just baled, too.

As a result, much of my towns original village was condemned. The buildings look ok from the outside, but were damaged inside beyond repair. Our local museum barely escaped damage to its’ art collection. The buildings HVAC & electrical system was heavily damaged. The post office lost its mail delivery jeeps

One local popular restaurant was rebuilt on structural concrete piers about 8’ higher than its’ original height.
Maybe thats what the church needs to do.

Just curious …. If it was a mosque that got flooded, would your decision to donate change?

Why or why not?

Seems like this thread mainly relates to who supports the religion.

insurance poor is a dilemma we all can face. Car insurance, health insurance, property insurance, life insurance. Sometimes reality kicks in and you can’t afford it all. 250,000 a year for 4 years would get you a usable facility.

No. I believe that all religions worship the same God, it's the methods which vary.
