L3540 HSTC 4wd with loader and 444 hours for a L4760 HSTC 4wd with loader with 30 hours? Dealer quoted me $39,400 for new machine and will give me a quote on the trade tomorrow.

The L3540 is a good machine but seems to be a little light on HP occasionally. I made the final 48th payment on this machine this past Monday. It has a small dent in the hood, busted screen/grill and a crack in the canopy. Insurance is paying for these repairs less the $250 deductible. Other than this minimal damage that is being repaired the machine performs flawlessly and runs excellent. I also get a tax write off if I buy the new machine.

Exactly how much more HP is the new tractor?

Oiltech, I asked the dealer how much it would cost also for a 4760/loader/cab/etc and he just told me retail to retail the 4760 was a little over 11,000 more. I never did get a trade price form him.

You are bumping up horsepower, frame size and gaining a cab and you can write it off............if the trade is reasonable ,do it for sure.

If it's just for horsepower, my choice would be to buy a second tractor. A used one, maybe even 2wd. Another member is shopping for a similar size tractor, found a Massey 1190(I think). That's a 4wd with between 50-60 HP. You could buy a second tractor for the hit you'll take on the trade. If you need more HP and a bigger loader, then maybe the trade makes sense.

I'm curious, did they get back to you with a price that you find interesting?

I'd do it in a heart beat IF they give you what you want for you trade. Anything larger than the L3540 (now LXX60) had a significantly stronger FEL, and that makes all the difference in my books. The extra PTO HP is good, although you'll loose a bunch of it with the A/C in the cab running

yes but the with the 3540 you had a choice of two loaders and if you got the heavier one (724) it had a lot more lift.

Just curious. You have a larger tractor so you have extra HP if you need it and (unless I'm mistaken) both tractors you have now have cabs. So is the lack of HP occasionally really an issue?

Is it just you running the tractors? If yes, and you don't need a second one to use at the same time I'd stick with what you have, it's paid off and you own it. I guess it depends if it's a want versus need scenario.

Just me running them, and will probably get the new one for expense write off

If you really need the write off, are there any other implements you could use and still write them off? I guess maybe weigh out what it'll cost you to upgrade as it applies to your tax liability.

No tax write-off will match the option of just keeping your cash.

I get it, sometimes it's just fun to buy something :) I just picked up a 2015 Silverado 2500HD to run up to Sonic drive-in for a coke.

There's something to be said be said about owning outright and cash under the mattress. It really depends on specific circumstances though, it's really tough for us to know them all. I've got a KX121 on my mind as I could really use the excavator, conversely I'd also really like to get into a larger MFWD tractor and sell my 3930 MFWD. The bigger tractor will have to be down the road I think, as I could use the excavator more.

If you're looking for a tax write off is there something else you can get? Maybe a small dozer or a skid steer? There's nothing wrong with what your planning, just that you might take a pretty good hit on your 3540 to get a tractor. Now I like HST, I think I'm more productive doing loader work and will often use my smaller 4240 over my 580k simply because I can change directions with no effort and with the H-DS function I can change traveling speeds without having to shift gears. I also bought the 4240 with the idea that I would keep it for decades. If I felt it was not quite perfect for what I wanted and had the opportunity to upgrade because after getting plenty of seat time I knew better what would be that perfect fit, yes I would upgrade.
