Looks like it has a slip clutch from the picture but hard to tell....

ok i will take a closer look. i always have a six year old and a two year old in tow so i never dedicate 100% of my attention to the task at hand ...

If not there, I’d recommend getting slipclutch.
Should only take about a second to ascertain, my slip clutch is at mower end of pto shaft, can’t miss it.

If there is a slip clutch, I would loosen it up all the way and spin it so that its lips to make sure it can slip, then retighten according to manufacturer's directions.
Few things are more frustrating than a slip clutch that doesn't slip and turns your drive shaft into a pretzel, or your gearbox into a collection of scrap metal...

If it has a slip clutch, loosen it so you know it's free, and then re-tension it. If it doesn't have a slip clutch, it will have a shear pin which will protect it if you hit something (no adjustment necessary).

Yep. My Rotary Cutter has a shear pin, and they work just fine.

Have the tractor idled down before you engage the PTO (the blades fly out abruptly if you don't)

thanks for the tip! going on our third year in this place and this will be the first time i have cut the steep part of our field. the neighbors will be pleased!

Be careful on those hills if the vegetation is high, never sure what lurks beneath to cause trouble.
