I have a 2001 2425 that the tram pump that drives the wheels quit working. Upon removing the lovejoy coupler i found the keyway fubar. (See pic below) does anyone have any suggestion as to resolve this? Called terry and another pump is 6 thousand and some change. I was thinking about machining the half moon key to accomidate a square stock pin and re installing. Any other thoughts?

For the price of $6K vs. doing something to work just like OE, go for it.

McMaster-Carr has some good keys and key stock. My workplace orders a good deal from there.

Be certain to order the undersize or oversize properly. Hardness, material grade, etc.

Since this is on a pump with fluids, I would choose the 416 SS and the B86 rating.
It is rated the same as 316L, but at a far better price.

416 stainless steel key stock is stronger than other stainless key stock and can be heat treated for extra strength. It's corrosion resistant and magnetic. 416 stainless steel key stock is more corrosion resistant than steel key stock.

@Tchamp sorry to see that.

Locktite makes a special keyway repair adhesive, #660. I would use that, and perhaps add a grub screw as well. I used it to repair a wood chipper keyway that has held up to quite a bit of subsequent force.

For less than $6k, I bet a friendly neighborhood machinist could make a new keyway.

All the best,

Peter

My pressure washer key way did the same thing couple years ago, I tigged the keystock into the engine shaft. Mind you it was a bit lower HP than your's. Another option would be to machine another spot opposite the original.

I like that idea of machining a keyway i will look into finding a machine shop to see if i can get that done. Thanks

$6K = ouch!

I paid $8K for the entire PT425 in 2001. Yikes!

I agree with the suggestions to see if you can have the shaft filled and re-keyed, or the loctite suggestion from Ponytug before spending that kind of money.

What machining capabilities do you have? You could machine a proper keyway (not a half-moon) in a different location on the shaft. However, it appears the shaft was damaged when the key failed. In general, keys and keyways are not the most effective method for preventing shaft rotation. Since the shaft is not hardened, the key will eventually wear down the keyway if exposed to shock loads—though the Lovejoy coupling should absorb these forces if the spider remains in good condition.

Another option, which I prefer, is to pin the shaft to the Lovejoy connector. This involves reinstalling the Lovejoy on the shaft, drilling through both in place, and securing them with a properly sized spring pin. Given the pump's age and likely wear, this approach should keep it functional until the pump itself requires replacement. If you take this approach, support the bottom of the Lovejoy when beating the pin into place to avoid damaging the pump bearings.

I wonder how much life is left on the internals?

I would cut a new love-joy in 1/2 to enable you to clamp it to the shaft with a HD muffler clamp (or cable clamp). Before you do you use the magic key fix or liquid metal or Loctite. Cut the split 90 deg away from key so it compresses the key in the slot. If that doesn't work long enough, drill hole with bolt to tighten the homemade split. Permanent Loctite (typically red, use the right number like 262) alone and clamped should hold it. Since the pump shaft is shot anyway, might as well try to make it work.
