That's a really nice setup there! Do you know who makes that grapple? It's not really the root rake style OR L bottom style but almost a hybrid of the two designs.
Something like that would be great on my 410 backhoe.

i have the wildkat. Got it from a ritchie brothers auction. they have sites all over the us and i have seen this grapple go from $750 to $2000 depending on the day

I believe Terry has the Wildkat Extreme Root Rake.

i do. the 74" one. wouldn't want to go smaller, and i don't believe it weighs 865 lbs like the say it does. there is also another company that makes something very similar, but i can't remember who

In retrospec I'd buy the widest one that anyone made. I have a 64" and I drop brush. Might try yours in 84". How is it for moving larger diameter logs? Does it grab them?

brush dropping will still happen with this grapple too if you don't get a good bite

this is the only picture i have of a single log not a big one, but not tiny either. it works well with one large log or a group of small ones.

get both. i am a fan of the rake style then again i am using it to RAKE. mine also has longer bottom tines it will hold a log when the grapple is rolled back without the lid pinching it. it opens over 48" i bought it at auction unused for $1200. it holds plenty of brush. it is 74" wide covers the front tires

I LIKE IT- that is one cool grapple, great price to!

Overall width is not the important factor in whether or not brush falls out the sides. Probably top arm width is an important factor but the biggest factor would seem to be how you pick up the load. If you go into a huge pile and take a bite, some will almost always dribble out the sides. Same as if you drive into a big stand of blackberries or briar. You will snag some stuff that is connected to material outside the grapple and when you backup or lift you will have trailing material that is not properly secured. If you don't want to drop anything it is best to make an intermediate pile narrower or about the same width as the grapple and then pick it up a second time. I usually do that anyways as I like to pack as much as I can before driving to a dump spot and find I can pack about two or three bite loads into one compacted load by using the intermediate pile technique.

I found that out pretty quick on my first time picking up brush.

exactly though i drive back into the same load, andd i try to have the load at teh bottom of a tree or several trees so it give you something to push against

Yes although that sometimes means scraping the bark so don't do it with ornamental trees. I prefer to just pile stuff high in a clear area and then open the grapple wide in fully dumped position and come down on top of the pile compressing it before closing the grapple. Amazing sometimes how much brush can be compressed.

true sounds advice, haven't had that happen yet as i've been on the edge of the woods. that doesn't works so well for me with the size tractor/grapple i have it will drive the pile into the ground. maybe i need more practie
