X585 Pop and surge

Hello to all. I have a X585 with 10 hours on it. Traded up from a JD345. I really like it except for one enoying problem. Ocasionally the tractor goes into a mode where the rpm surges or changes by itself like I was adjusting the throttle. In this mode the tractor is not very useful to say the least. I have tried various things like changing throttle position, playing with hydraulic levers or stopping pto but usally just shut it off and restart. I have heard complaints of this nature before on other forums but don't know the fix. This engine is fuel injected. Anybody with any thoughts?

Just a guess, dirty injectors from dirty fuel? Water in the fuel?

Best see your dealer about it. Shouldn't be doing it. I have the same engine and have had nothing like what you describe. Let us know what you find out.
Some bad fuel seems to be a good possibility, except for the low hours. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

By all means, take it back to the dealer!!! I've heard of fuel injected engines doing similar things from water in the fuel or dirty injectors, but with such low hours on a tractor, you deserve some resolution from the dealer!

I guess I could have gotten bad gas at the pump. The gas that I'm using has been fresh especially due to all the rain. We've been cutting every 4-5 days. Maybe dealer gave bad gas when I picked it up had a couple of gallons in it. I did call the dealer when it happened the first time and he didn't really have an answer. He did say that it happens sometimes and it just works itself out. I have refrained from taking it in because it is hard to fix something when the symptoms are occasional.

Last night took it out to cut and started surging again within couple of minutes and then went away. Cut grass for 30 minutes as performance started to deteriorate I manage to get front done but the throttle control no longer had any effect. So I took it into the dealer this morning and will post when they fix it.

Dealer had the tractor for 3 days. They witnessed the surging problem and unstuck the throttle. They took out the plugs and decided it might be running rich so leaned it out. They tried it various times and decided it could be a dirty gas problem that might work itself out and they didn't know what else to do so I took it home to use with the promise I will return if any more trouble. I started it up this weekend and the throttle started sticking again and put a drop of oil where it enters the throttle body and also on the governor shaft where it enters the crankcase. I was able to cut the grass for the neext 45 minutes until it started to rain with no trouble.
My concern is this could be an ongoing problem and maybe require a new throttle body?

If the dealer can not figure it out, tell them you want a NEW unit, or give you one while they repair yours properly. You don't need those kind of problems on a new unit. G

If it's related to dirty gas, I suspect that leaves the dealer off the hook. Was any gas collected from the tank that proves 'dirty gas' was in the tank? And what that 'dirt' might be? Maybe its from your can, but maybe its from the dealer's first pour into the tank (they come shipped to the dealer dry).

You have the 30 day warranty, which hopefully you have not passed.

I agree with the 'keep it at the dealer until it runs right', but sounds like your dealer is working with you, and will continue to in the future.

No I don't believe they have any dirty gas proof /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I have had the tractor for 2 months so pass the 30 day promise. I was eyeing up the new 595 that just came in though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, depending how big the fuel tank is, I say empty it out, flush w/ clean fuel. If you think your supply (transport) tank is dirty, put some fuel in a jar and let it settle to see if there is dirt.

Wait..... this thing doesn't have a fuel filter????? Dirty fuel "should" be filtered before getting to the injector..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Actually it does. The dealer has ordered a new thottle body and will be here this week. Hopefully that fixes things.

I have a 2003 X585 with about 60 hours that recently started to surge intermittently. Several visits to the dealer have not located problem. Curious if anyone else has been able to locate the source of this problem.

Boy this was an old thread. I guess I should give it some closure. Don't know if this is your problem but the trottle body was the culprit. It appears that the valve was sticking or had high friction which caused the problem. No problems after they replaced it. This could be a chronic problem with the EFI throttle body or maybe a bad batch?

Same engine, same problem. Got worse with hours. Changed injectors, EFI controller, temp sensor specs out. Checked out throttle body, it looked ok, but didn't replace.
