how bad is shake? I know at low idle speed it feels rougher, but increase speed and it smooths out. which seems normal for all diesels.

Mine has a bad shake around 1200 RPM, above or below that it's pretty smooth.

One thing that was wrong with mine is the motor mount under the fuel filter had rotted away and the mount on the opposite corner had a broken bracket. Fixing both of those took a lot of the shake out of the engine.

if serviced regularly and taken care of, the yanmar should last well beyond 3,000-4,000 hours. I have an uncle who has had a 430 since the 80's and bought it new. Used it to mow a commercial factory lot for 5 years. The hour meter quit working after 9,000 hours. That was 2 years or so ago... As the old saying goes " don't worry about the mule...just load the wagon!"

i see some of your logic but not in total agreement with your line of reasoning. i don't see it as being the money pit you're making it out to be. your new machine will need maintenance and repairs too, after the 6 month or 1 year warranty is over. you'll have a really tough time convincing me todays stuff that is built from outsourced parts from the cheapest bidder (=China) is going to last as long as some of the proven historic units. but man, do they ever make everything look sweet nowadays!! no doubt you should have many good years tho, and outlast me hour per hour, hands down.

to say you wasted 25% when you got a few years use doesn't make sense. that's 2 years less use you put on your new machine, means it will last 2 years longer. and you'll still get some residual vlaue out of it. everything costs money to run.

but you are correct, limited market, tough sell. still, not ready to list it as a freebie or take peanuts. I think it has some value. 25% probably still a bit high/wishful thinking maybe by me. in the end, it'll be worth what someone is willing to pay me.

maybe I should part it out. those guys make good money selling parts.

i never buy new cars. I try to get the best bang for my buck. older (10 years or so), low K, and a fraction of new. cost per mile works out cheaper.

1 year warranty? Try 4 years on my X740. It is also financed over 4 years. For every single month I make payments, it is covered under warranty. All I need to worry about is oil changes and filters, that's it. With care, it will last a very long time, so I am not concerned. If someone wants to buy a machine and wants to keep the same machine for a good length of time, I suggest new. Normally I would also encourage used, but if your going to own it for 20 years like I plan to, it's nice knowing your the only one who has used it.

I should probably start a new thread on this.
I would only say it's a lot worse than some I have seen. I did look at a brand new Kubota with a Yanmar and they do shake some at lower speeds.
The tractor has been mistreated, not serviced etc, and sit unused for about 2 years.
But now the glow plugs were replaced and the injector pump rebuilt just to get it to crank.
The injectors (to the other comment) were not replaced, but I have ran Seafoam thru the engine now for a few hours hoping to help clean it.
The engine oil was almost syrup and I have changed it twice now. Also two new fuel filters as I am trying to clean the fuel system.

I have helped the shake by simply raising the idle speed but am wondering what else could be wrong.

The other symptom is that the engine seems "weak".
Black smoke when you push the throttle wide open.
Then if I hit some heavy grass the engine chokes & puffs more of that black smoke as it strains to catch back up to speed.

4 years, awesome!! I thought it was like ATVs where you get 6 months so I doubled it for JD quality. Is 4 years standard factory warranty or did you have to buy extended?

is x740 diesel? what is ballpark price for a new X740? 0% financing?

I thought black meant power on diesel? or at least unburned fuel. so if fuel doesn't burn when compressed...does that mean a cylinder lacks compression?? I dunno... just theorizing out loud.

smitty9805.... that's encouraging to hear. So I'm somewhere around 30% of my unit's life!! Actually, there are a lot of really old JD tractors around and this was built more like a tractor than a mower...:)

I have a 1962 IH B414 gasser and it's still solid and strong.

I'd have to agree with JD tank about the majority of buyers will look at new if they can afford the payments for X number of years. If I could comfortably afford, I'm sure I'd seriously consider the same thing. So I have to be patient, adjust price, and wait for the right buyer.

Or maybe keep running this and get rid of the F935. I only use this mower once per week from May to October, about 1-2 hours of cutting per week. So that'd be roughly 50 hours/year? Hmmmm, maybe this is overkill!!

With any small diesel your rolling the dice on the hours it will last..too many variables to really make an educated guess on an individual tractors life span. The biggest engine life killer I see is overheating, many people do not keep the screen clean and do not service there cooling system often enough.Even the best engines will not take repeated running at high temps, especially when the machine is running with a heavy load, there's no way to tell when looking at a used tractor if its been smoked a few times....my general rule assuming proper maintenance is expect 2-4000 hrs out of the 3600 rpm little diesels, the slower running 3000-3200 usually give 3-5k.the 2500 rpm governed engines usually run 4-8 k hours, and the bigger 1600-1800 rpm engines easily last 10-40k hours .

Only the X700 series machines get 4 years warranty as far as lawn and garden tractors go. It is included in the price of the machine.

Yes the X740 is a diesel, 2WD. I opted for the 2 wheel drive because in about 4 years time, I will be purchasing a larger utility tractor to do the heavy work. I have a need for two kinds of machines. One machine I need to be light, yet tough enough to do some tasks around the home side of things. I still wanted a diesel, but the main purpose of this machine is to cut grass, haul a cart, and do front blade work. My ground here is saturated with rain 7 months of the year, so it is very soft. Weight is a crucial factor for me. I could not go any heavier than the X700 series on the home chunk of property. So, I did not need the AWD system. Would it have been nice? Sure. However, even in 2WD, these machines are extremely capable and down-right impressive. With a diff lock, tire chains and weights, what more do I need for the home front? Buying the 2WD over the AWD saved me $1,800 on the purchase price, and saves me hours of time and some dollars when the maintenance intervals roll around. Changing my hydro oil takes 10 minutes with zero hassle. Changing hydro oil in the AWD is a 2 hour ordeal with the entire tractor needing to be on jack stands off the ground. The front axle is hydraulic, so the air MUST be bled from the system every time you flush it. I would be willing to bet my 2WD with weights and chains would follow a AWD model anywhere 98% of the time. My ground is all flat too, so another reason for me to only get 2WD.

All of my bigger projects for the other half of our property will need to wait until my debt is paid down so I can acquire a bigger machine. My plan is to have a 3720 or 4720 utility tractor for the heavy work, and use my X740 for everything else.

When I purchased my X740 it was the last 2012 left in my Province. It was considered stale inventory by my dealership because it was there for 3 months. On top of that, John Deere had a $1,000 rebate on these machines to clear them out. These are now discontinued and the new model of my machine is the X750. I actually prefer the 2012 styling, so that is why I opted to grab it and not a 2013. My machine was stored in an indoor showroom, and when I signed the papers, it had 0.2 hours on the clock. It had never sat outside for any length of time. All of these factors, combined with the wicked price I landed, I could not say no. I bought brand new because used X700's are very hard to find, no one wants to part with these tractors. I also bought new because I want to keep this machine for 30 years. I am 25 years old, and I hope to teach my kid how to cut grass on this machine someday. Like I said, when I combined all the factors, it only made sense to buy new, and to grab this 2012 while I could.

I know you might be thinking, "25? What are you doing playing with tractors" I am not a party animal. I was born an old man from the start. Nothing makes me happier than to stay home, play with my equipment, tinker in my garage with all my tools, and go in for dinner when the beautiful wife tells me it is ready. If I could, I don't think I would ever leave my property. If I didn't need groceries and gas and have bills to pay, I don't think I would ever go out. Nothing in the world better than being home.
