yanmar ym 177 HELP!

The guys here on the board seem to know almost everything there is to know about yanmars. The fact that the guys here know little about the tractor seems to imply that it is indeed rare. Searches on the internet seem to turn up a few at the exporters in Japan. In terms of "getting your money back" the guy who sold it is in fact operating a business to make money and did mislead you (apparently it is a grey market as the exporters from japan are offering it, but it is one of the few 3 digit non-American models). Ignorance is no excuse. If the guy is misleading numerous folks the attorney general of your state may be interested. It sounds like the tractor isn't working that well so he ought to make it right anyway. Of course what he should do and what he does may be quite different.

What did the seller say about parts? Sounds like he knew a little, bought a rare tractor that had a few problems, then resold it. It was probably cheap for him because of the rarity.

If you decide to keep it, then it may have long periods of down time to research and/or fabricate parts even if it is a highly dependable tractor.

"It was probably cheap for him because of the rarity."

Indeed. I used to e-mail with a guy who imported a container of tractors, one of which was a YM177. As I recall, he paid very little for it, but it turned out to be a good running tractor - after he freed the locked up engine.

Unfortunately, I never got a photo of that particular tractor from him.

The tractor looks good. It looks very similar to a YM270 that a guy I go to church with has.

That's a neat looking tractor! Don't blame you for wanting to keep it and make it right. Should be fun.
