Hello! I am new to the forum and in need of some advice! I hope one of you has a some to offer. I recently purchased a ym 177 from a guy who told me this was an american tractor since it only had three model #'s. My problem is that I need a couple of parts for it i.e. exhaust manifold, glow plugs, ect but I cannot find any of these items not even a service manual which I would really like to get my hands on. any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Leon

Welcome to the forum!

I could be wrong, but I think the YM177 is one of the very few YM three-digits that is a gray market, and a rare one at that. Does it have tires with tall lugs and Japanese writing on the safety labels?

Whether it is a gray or not, you'll probably find adequate help on this board to solve about any problem you might enounter.

The guy that sold it to you...was he just an individual, or does he sell tractors? If he considers himself to be a dealer of sorts than he ought to be able to supply you with a parts manual and parts sources.

The tractor does have tall lugs on the tires but the warning labels are all in English. As to the guy I bought it from,he said he bought and sold tractors on a "casual basis" for extra side money but that he really did not know anything about this tractor. so far I have had a hard time locating anything for this one although I remain hopeful! Thank you for your input. I guess I should have researched this a little more before I made the purchase!

The only thing I know about the 177 is that it is older than my 1700 ( I think )... not sure whether it is grey market or domestic.

The YM177 is a gray market tractor, older than the 1700, and relatively rare here in the US. Someone must have replaced the decals with ones in english. I happen to know a guy who imported one. Its a great tractor, and very heavy for its power compared to most (thats a good thing - since these tractors run out of traction long before they run out of power).

Unless you can find a parts tractor, or can determine that an exhaust manifold from a different more popular model will work, I rather doubt you will be able to find one. Try Western Kentucky Tractor Parts. You may want to look into repairing the manifold you have. What exactly is wrong with it?

To my knowledge, none of the Yanmars had glow plugs. Most have a thermostart device that threads into the intake manifold. When power is applied (normally by turning the key to the left of OFF to the TS position) the TS plug heats up - a temperature sensitive valve opens and drips fuel onto the heating element and starts a little fire in the intake to warm things up. Look for a small (~2 oz) reservoir above the intake manifold with a short piece of fuel line running to a plug threaded into the intake manifold. Put fuel in the reservoir, and see if it works.

There were a few Yanmars that had glow plugs. The 2200, and FX26 did. I am thinking that the 2500 did also, but it has been a while since I was on one of those.

Brent,

My observation is as yours. Most F series and a few of the YMs had glow plugs. By the way, the thermostart is available via John Deere as they used it as well on some of their earlier models, I think the 650 had it.

I don't have a 177 parts book, but if the engine number could be identified it may be that a different model shared that engine and likewise the manifold.

Leon, not to get on a soapbox, but if the guy selling this to you is making money doing it, he should not have told you it was a USA model and he certainly should have a parts source. That is the difference from buying from guys like LMTC, EFC, Ernie, and many others. If you buy from them you get service and a lot of hard earned and hard learned knowledge that would be at your fingertips. There is a plethora of guys that have popped up lately selling these tractors and they haven't a clue what they are selling or how to take care of them. If a dealer doesn't have a mechanic, parts books, technical books and a parts shelf...I'd be very wary.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the correction! I knew that some of the later Yanmar engines had glow plugs, but I didn't know any of these engines showed up in the Yanmar tractors.

How about all you owners out there. Let us know what model Yanmar tractor you have and whether it has TS, glow plugs, or nothing! I can start with these:

YM1110 - TS
YM1301 - TS
YM1500 - TS (but maybe not all)
YM1510 - TS
YM1702 - TS
F14 - TS
F15 - TS

I appreciate all the info you tractor buffs have supplied to me. I really knew nothing about grey market/usa what have you this has really been a good/bad learning experience for me. as for repairing the manifold I have got. someone already tried and I might say they did a piss poor job of it at that. I tried to repair the unrepairable! the manifold plate on one side had been completely broken off. Whoever brazed it back on did so by removing 1/4" of material from one of the exhaust tubes "it would never have sealed" the only way to fix it would be to cut the other tube off and remove 1/4" from it as well!

I am a machinist by trade and a bit of a fabricator. I am seriously thinking about making my own.

I called a couple of places this morning who inturn called a couple of places trying to locate one. Not to my suprise the told me yhat yanmar never even made a ym 177. After gathering all the numbers I could find I called a guy in OK grey market tractor parts. He told me that this tractor had an Iseki transmision coupled to a yanmar motor. None of the numbers that I can find are of any help as far as identifying the block!!
