"This year, I have a nest of Yellow Jackets that took up residence in a hanging basket on the front porch. "

You can't get to that one?

"I can spray, but that wont get the nest."

There are ways to fog almost any solution for insects. Big Box stores might have the machines. Some use propane canisters as propellant, so extreme care is required.

The nest is protected by a plastic basket, so I don't think spraying it will do much good. I ain't going near it to unhook it.

The ones under the back deck are a different situation.

That's why I sugegsted ...

If it cools off enough at night ... 60s or so ... try a large garbage bag. Open it wide and lift it from below over the basket, then close tightly. Remove the whole thing from the hangar. You may need to cover yourself as much as possible too, but they're usually sluggish/slow when cool.

Can you slip an open trash bag up and around the handing basket and quickly pull it shut? At night, with air conditioning blowing on them? lol

Can you unscrew a board to get to them? Foam sounds like an option..I havent used it. Just do it when they are calm. Also next year you need to do it early to try and keep their numbers down. **** I hate yellow jackets.

I had yellow jackets coming inside my house, from the electrical outs and anything else that they could find!. using raid multi insect killer killed them off quickly, and using fake wasp nests kept them away.. it was my neighbor across the street that had huge nests of them inside his walls that caused all this nonsense!. too bad the law don't require common sense!.

I feel for ya... every year it's a battle. Early detection is best, get them when the nest is small. Sprayed a can two weeks before and thought, it's a Lite Year... Emptied 3 cans this past weekend... sure I missed a couple nests. Need to reload more spray for going up in two weeks!!!

If you can't reach them, under the deck, tape off the area and get them in the winter.... I've gone full Rambo on big nests that I can spray/hit, at night with two cans a blazing... if I can not see the nest or spray the nest... that's a different thing. Yes, gas works best if you can pour it in there. Never needed a rock to cap it. I have a 6 foot pole with a pint jar taped to on the end of it... I'm brave but not stupid (well that's up for debate....)

I've had one friend, that has found nests that I've missed a couple years in a row. Usually, under stair treads...

Get the foaming wasp spray. Buries them so they can't fly. Used it against a yellow jacket nest that didn't appreciate me weed eating near them. They stung me 7-8 times before I could get inside - felt like I was getting stabbed by hot needles. Followed me over 100 feet as I dropped the weed eater and ran away. The last one got me while inside the front porch. Weed eater ran for 45 minutes until it finally ran out of gas! Used a full can against a ground next of bald faced hornets. Mowed over their nest without knowing it with the bush hog. Coming back the other way I saw a cloud of angry hornets!

I've had good luck with any of the wasp sprays that shoot out about six feet. Wait until dark, so they are in the nest and you are less apt to get stung. One treatment should do it.

Haven't come across any in a couple of years now thank goodness, but the above is generally what I do. I'll generally have 2 cans for backup just to have them.

And don't forget! When you get stung, apply the juice of an onion to the sting and it will stop the pain almost instantly. No joke.

I go through maybe 30 cans of wasp spray a year. I get mud daubers, wasps, blue hornets, those ground bees, and I don稚 know what else. You just have to keep after them. It helps to just run away to if they come after you, if you can scream like a little girl that helps too.
