( You know the maximum number of times you can flush to toilet after the power goes out )

That one's very true.

As soon as the power went out, I used to fill two 5 gallon containers for domestic use and I kept a 55 gallon drum permanebtly filled to handle the toilet issue. It's been a lot better since they moved the water tower to higher ground but the containers and drum are still there, ready for action. You just never know ....

OK, I have to ask a dumb question. You mentioned water tower so do I assume correctly you're not on a well? I understand the issue when having a well but for public water isn't it gravity fed?
I just connected to public water last month. Won't the water continue to flow if power is out?

We have a rural water district that is one of the good ones with very large standpipes/towers but they have only a 24-36 hour reserve. They occasionaly have a pump or valve fail. They are usually back up in 8 hrs but we have run out. Always plan for backup.

I am on public water here, but have a 5,000 gal cistern mostly full just in case.....Also use it for any outside watering....

When we first moved in, the gas guy, the power company guy, the guy that delivered our fridge, and the phone guy all asked "Seen any bucks on your place?"
Our mailman drives a 20 year old primer colored blazer and asks me lift our packages out of the back because his back acts up on him.

WELL, You know you live in the country when you have to have the well pump replaced because it was hit by lightning. Back in August I posted some questions about lightning striking and me getting shocked while washing my hands. We've had trouble with our pump randomly shutting off since then. It's gotten worse so today we had the well drillers come check it out. They checked the amps and then ask "you been hit by lightning?" That little act of nature is going to cost me over $1,000. Well, what are you going do? You got to have water.

You know you live in the country when... You look in your garage or barn and you have spare everything, hose clamps, a bunch of oil filters, a case or more of oil, boxes of pipe fittings, screws and bolts of every kind and size. Because the last thing you want to happen is for something to break and have to drive all the way into town for a couple of pipe fittings.
As an example its late Sunday afternoon and you run the posthole digger thru the water pipe and the electrical lines that run to the well, /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif didn't know they were there....Ah.. well Ok knew they were there but forgot untill the water came pouring out of the hole.
Nice to have all those spare pipe fittings in the garage.
