Your towing rigs and trailers

I haven’t weighed it. I’d say that’s pretty close.

I sold my Bigtex trailer that I was using a borrowed truck to pull and bought this setup instead. I lost $200 on the trailer after owning it 2 years and using it quite a bit so theres to the just rent it crowd. I may end up trading this off for a little nicer model but it’s a way better setup for what I needed. I’d really like a Volvo truck with a 400 hp diesel. I think air brakes would be better too. New to me hauler plus tow vehicle: 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 118" wheelbase rated for 5,000 lbs. Has a 2.7L 5 cylinder turbodiesel. They were sold as Dodges (and Freightliner) until 2008 but 2006 was the last year of the T1N model. It does not have the DPF or DEF systems of newer diesels and has legendary durability.

Just took it out of the body shop with a few minor items left, so I can get the mechanical maintenance done and start hauling. DGC Auto Body (Medford, MA) did a great job.

Before: the right rear quarter was smooshed, rusty rocker panels, 15" steel wheels, and a partially-removed Dodge grille.

New grille and headlights. Still haven't decided about the "316 CDI" badge.

You're brave Gman..... posting a picture of a pre-emissions diesel with a clean body AND the plate is visible ! Hope you have good theft coverage !

;)

Once you're used to the space in a van, it's hard to be happy with less. Nice choice .

You're right! And he just freshened it up at the shop!

That reminds me of the GMC Safari van we had that we lost in a wreck. The thing was a great multi-purpose vehicle. 3 rows seating, back seat removable, center seat folded could hold a 4x8 flat.

Hated losing that thing.

IMO, there's a lot to be said for a mid-size RWD van. A couple of my friends used multiple iterations of those GM Astro/Safaris, for commercial work.

Once you got past (replaced) the glass/plastic leaf springs (OK for Vette, ixnay on cargo applications), they did OK. My one friend really liked the AWD version in the Winter - that van was always loaded to the roof with wire/cable/etc. so it always had tons of traction.

In fact, he got towed one time by the autoclub after a breakdown, and once they finally got rolling, the tow-truck driver asked him "What the _____ do you have in that thing ? That's miles away the heaviest small truck I've towed !".

Hey Gman - post some mileage figures, once you get some distant runs in pls.

Thats a problem in Canada?

So do you cover your plates while you drive around?

Many people obscure the plate, when posting pics on the internet.

What ? You don't have any tin-foil hats down your way ? ;)

Never understood this concern. This isn't James Bond's Aston Martin, it's a cargo van.

Me neither considering it’s on the back of your vehicle for everyone to see.

Had to fold out the tow mirrors and use "Tow Haul" for this one. :)

Did a test pull of the sailboat trailer today with the Sprinter. Didn’t hit the highway but it seems to handle it fine. It’s probably a bit over the 5,000 lb rating but should allow us to get rid of the Tahoe.
