Terry, what's up with the front tires on backwards?

Good catch at spotting that one. Maybee its for better traction when backing out of a pile with a full bucket

exactly, though i don't know how much more traction it really provides
I swapped the front wheels on the V518, it made a noticeable difference backing out of the silt.

Just picked up a new used truck the other day. 2010 F350 4x4, extended cab short wheelbase with a service body. It has the 6.8L Triton V10. Far from what I was looking for, as I was looking for a diesel either new or only a couple years old as an all around work truck and personal truck. This was a good enough deal that I was able to pay cash and I could not pass it up. Once I get back from my work trip in a couple months I still plan on getting another truck to use for everything other than day to day dirty work! Anybody have any tips on the V10? Besides what I have read, I know hardly anything about them. Not too common around here. I like it so far, plenty of power, but is definitely thirsty! Should make a nice work truck, though.

My uncles have had bunches of them. If it's got 4.10 or 4.30 gears it will pull anything. 3.73 gears not so much. They also had GVWR's between 9,900 and 11,500#'s

What is the GVWR and the axle ratio? The GVWR and axle code is inside the drivers door on the Vin Sticker.

I got it an auction and looked at a few different trucks, I am 99% sure it has 4.10 gears and a 10,500 GVWR. I will try to double check tomorrow.

Looks good. We like the supercabs.

Take care of it and it will likely last 300k miles easy.

Just be careful when changing out those spark plugs, they like to break in the head.

The V10 is dead nuts reliable runner. It will go the distance, but it's thirsty too...

I like the ford v10 a lot. I'm kind of surprised they quit using it. it has a ton of power and seem super reliable except for a couple of the first generation ones. Only negative is they are thirsty probably lose two or 3 miles per gallon versus comparable V-8's but unless you're driving a ton of miles that's not that big of a deal. And hey it's a V 10 that definitely plays out as another man card in the deck.

I just went back to the V10 from the Ford 6.8 diesel. I had a 09 V10 that was a good truck, but ate manifolds. They lasted about 8000 miles and started leaking. .. Replaced under warranty twice. Tried the 12 diesel and I didn't have much confidence in owning it out of warranty. I traded for a F450 V10 ..it gets 7.5-8 mpg if I'm easy on the throttle.

They still use the V10, but only in the Chassis Cab trucks, not the pickups. The main reasons for discontinuing use of the V10 in pickups are cost (~25% more parts in a V10 vs. a V8) and fuel economy. From what I have heard, the 6.2L V8 does a remarkable job as a replacement for the V10.

Good to know thank you

I had a F-350 with the 6.8l v-10 and a 12' flatbed. We'd joke how it'd pass anything on the road, except a gas station.

In reality it was a nice for pulling and you really couldn't help or hurt the mpg no matter how you had it loaded. Given the choice I'd have another in place of the new overly-regulated diesels.

That, and it's tough to make a large displacement motor meet emissions. Same reason Dodge killed their V10 and GM is 8.1 V8.

Ford still uses the V-10 in the medium duty trucks.

Really enjoying all of these setups! Nice trucks and equipment folks.

Here's little red:

- 2011 Ram 1500 - 34" E rated tires and rear air lift helper coil bags - using a 14,000# Equalizer WDH when hauling trailer
- 20ft Load Trail Med Duty Trailer - +/- 10,400# capacity incl trailer
- Mahindra 2538 HST, 6ft Cutter, 6ft Box Blade, 5ft grapple and factory bucket (Loaded Trailer Weight +/- 8,000#)

I have a 2016 F450 4x4 dump with the V10. It pulls nice, not quite as well as my 2012 350 diesel dump did, but the 450 carries weight much better. And the wide front axle is much better turning. .. It is 7-9 mpg depending how hard I push on the pedal.. And 3.5 mpg plowing snow.

The old cable-throttle V10s were quite responsive and fun to drive. You would think that emissions could be controlled easier with a v10 than a similar displacement v8 since the combustion chamber is smaller.

What kind of milage do you guys get out of a v10? A buddy has one and he constantly brags on it. He clams he gets 12 mpg in town driving and about 8 pulling a heavy load which is no worse than my F-350 with the 5.4 v8.

My '99 F350 with a 12' steel flatbed got 8-10 no matter how gently you drove or what you had loaded on or behind it.

I really miss driving that truck.
