Your towing rigs and trailers

I finally remembered to take a picture. My MX5800 setup coming back from cutting down some threatening trees and before unloading the tractor. This is a 2016 Titan XD with the 5.0L Cummins diesel and a 20' equipment trailer. View attachment 505251

How you liking the big 'C' and the XD?

This is my first diesel truck, and it took some getting used to. All of my adjustments became minimal, however, once I started pulling with it. I still don't like losing my gas mileage to regenerations, but there is little I can do about it.

The truck is so large that I have really learned to appreciate the camera system all around it. I didn't feel like I needed one with my F150, but now I appreciate knowing where my front and rear end actually are.

If you don't mind my asking, what made you upgrade from an F150? Was it the diesel? The diesel is definitely king when it comes to towing!

I was interested in an XD because it was what I wanted in a truck: mid-way between a half ton and three quarter ton. In the end, though, they just didn't have the payload over the F150, and the diesel wasn't getting appreciably better fuel economy than the 6.7L Super Duty.

Neighbor asked me to haul his MF1734E up to his camp for the summer. Here she is, all ready to go.

Very nice. I like the pop up dove tail.
Thanks, I wanted the pop up for hauling hay. Used the trailer to haul a couple tractors and a side by side around the farms today. Trailer worked great, towed like it wasn't even back there. Love the way it is set up after years of using the old car hauler.

Last year I bought a used Kaufman 24 foot deck over gooseneck to haul hay for a price I could not pass on, but if I had to buy a new trailer it would have a pop up dove tail. My Kaufman has a 4 foot dove tail, was going to build a removable wooden ramp for the dovetail to make it flat. No worries though. I can put more hay on it than what it is rated for. Buying large squares and round bales.

It turned out that the F150 3.5 Eco didn't have the towing capacity that I was looking for, and it was 2000 lbs lighter than the Titan but at a similar price. If I moved up to the F250, the $8K add on for diesel made the truck a few thousand dollars more expensive than the Nissan. Sadly, the government mandated emissions junk kills what would be a very nice fuel mileage. I average 18 without towing running back and forth to work and it gets better on the highway. As expected, pulling my rig around drops me to 12.

All in all, getting the Pro4X was the wife's decision when it came to the bottom line. I've been happy with everything but the DPF and DEF. I got all the lights, bells, and whistles for less than Ford and I can still pull my tractor and equipment around.

I think the surround cameras are a great thing.

I fully understand. That extra 2k lbs is really a huge help when towing...lighter isn't always better.

Yeah, these new diesels could pull some amazing fuel economy numbers if it weren't for the EPA. I do like cleaner air, but things have gone a bit overboard. I don't have enough miles on my truck to really get good fuel economy numbers yet (1k miles), but it's definitely better than the '08 6.4L I had before.

And yes, the surround cameras are great! I love them on my truck!

How much more can the Nissan tow over the F-150. Last time I looked they both tow and can carry about the same. You must have gotten a good deal on the Nissan some of those Pro4X diesels are up in the 60K range. Plenty of 3/4 and 1 ton diesels in that range too.

The tow and payload ratings are nearly the same with the F150 and Titan xD, however, when towing near the limits, the extra weight of the Titan can be an advantage. I believe the Titan has more rebates as well, which helps bring that 60k price down.

There are a lot of similarities between the F150 and the Titan XD. The Titan pulls about 1500 lbs more in weight, and Nissan wanted to get XDs out in the public view, so I got discounts and extras as part of the deal. While I am typically a Ford man, the extra weight was a good thing. Of course, it also detracted from the fuel mileage. I am happy with the way it pulls my equipment trailer and tractor (which is a bit over the weight limit for the F150.)

What's it rated for? I was looking at the Titan XD myself, but didn't know when it would be released (or if it would be in my price range when it finally hit the lots) so I went with a 3.5 eco to replace my Tacoma. I went from 6,500lbs tow to 12,300lbs with the max tow package so that's plenty for me. After True Car and trade it took the $52k MSRP down to $38k while I assumed the Titan would be in the $60k range based on the other diesel 3/4 ton prices. I love my F150, but I still look at the Titans and wonder. Though you mentioning the pain of the DPF/DEF makes me a little glad I didn't go that way. That was one of the concerns I had when considering the diesel version, and really made me wonder if I wanted to deal with it or not. The 420ft-lbs and 12,300lb tow of the eco seemed like a nice compromise. More than I had before for more of a margin to keep it below the limits, but not getting into new diesel regulation BS.
