I agree, pictures would be nice. I also have a 1700, like JB's, mine is a 2wd also but a great tractor. Are you replacing the head, or are you going to get it welded if possible? Thanks all

Yes this is my first tractor.:) I will gladly post pictures. Is there any thing in particular that you want to see? My parts are due in tomorrow on UPS. Once I check everything out I have to take the block and head to the machine shop. I priced the parts at local dealers and online. I ended up buying from partspring.com in Washington state. The parts were a good 20% cheaper than my local New Holland dealer along with free shipping to my door and no sales tax.

Russel,

I have good pics of the tractor with the head and oil pan removed. Most likely you would not need to go beyond that provided your crankshaft is in good order. I'm missing pics of the rocker arm assembly, push rods and camshaft.

few pics before you jump in with two feet:D:D Good luck,

JC,

Great pics JC, were there sleeves in the cylinders?

Thanks JC, thankfully mine has low hours on it (850 hrs) I shouldnt have to worry about pistons for awhile. Did you have to over bore the cylinders to put those new pistons in?

Tex,

I have 950 Hrs on my tractor and engine is in perfect shape, have a lot of compression. Don't suspect needing an overhaul anytime soon as long as I change the engine oil frequently. The pics you see are not mine, one of the guys here did it having some questions. I sent him some minor information and asked him to take some pics to satisfy my curiosiy and for future reference. I think under normal use and not abuse coupled with cheap oil changes you should be good to go anywhere from 3000-4000 hrs of operation on these diesel engines. Previous owner put 900 hrs on mine in 30 years, I doubt it if I can double it in next 30 years, heck.. I don't know if I'm going to be around in 30 years:D:D

By the way the guy who did the work did not bore out and only honed it for the new piston and ring. I reckon the ring might have been slightly larger than the OEM allowing him to hone the cylinder wall only. If I remember it right he hot tanked the head and did a valve job using original valves.

Well I didn't tell the whole story of my tractor(s). When I got the first one I took the head to have someone look it over. He said that it was too bad for welding because the crack went through the valve seat. But he said he could "pin it". I found out this was reaming a hole and pressing a pin in, drill another hole and another pin until the crack is gone. Well it took several months and several phone calls before I got the head back and it still wasn't finished. So that project fell by the wayside. Later I was looking on ebay and found a 1700 2WD and danged if I didn't buy it for $2500. That tractor ran good but I really wanted the 4WD. That way I can get deeper when I get stuck in the mud. Now I get the bright idea that I will rebuild the engine on the 4WD and take the good head off the other tractor. I will take the best parts from both tractors, fenders, hood, whatever and build one good tractor. When that one is finished, I will look in to getting the cracked head fixed and get the other tractor ready to sell or part out.
Now JC's message said that I wouldn't have to go past pulling the head, pistons and oil pan..... Well.... I went a little further than that as I am now up to my ..........elbows in torn down tractor parts. The 4WD tractor was abused the last year or so of its life and the only way to have confidence in the tractor is fix it right. Besides the picture at the end shows why I had to buy pistons and have to get it bored 0.20 over. The main and rod bearings looked good but the crank had to come out to find out for sure. I didn't have much time for pictures tonight. More will come later. My parts came in today so I need to check everything before going to the machine shop.

Oh by the way JB4310, what was the white stuff in the other pictures, salt:rolleyes:?

We don't get much snow down here.:p

well.. well .. well the plot thicken now:D:D as they say " you don't know what you don't know!!". I have gotten myself unintentionally in different kinds of quicksands in the past as well, but "perseverance' is the key. Keep it up and you'll be successful.

Wish you much success and keep us posted.

Ya I had trouble following all that, how many 1700's do you have? :)

Boy JC those pictures show a pretty robust block and head and those connecting rods could be weapons, why is the inside of the block red? is that from the factory or machine shop.

Jones, how did the head get cracked, do you think it was from ether or gas?

Oh and about that white stuff, along with that comes freezing temps, you can't see in the picture but I've got a pillow on the seat now, left it uncoverd, seat got wet and froze like a ROCK! a COLD ROCK!!!

JB,

John,

The whole casting gets covered with the finish inside and out. It is not powder coated but it is a pretty though finish, probably enamel. The Ford Blue was painted afterward. when they spray painted my tractor they missed a few spot right under diffy and it is red and exact the same finish that you see on the inside and next to crankshaft. when I opened the lift piston assembly it had exact the same finish as well. I agree it is a good and robust looking cast. With proper oil(lubrication) and water/pump (heat removal) would be difficult to kill this thing. Using explosive gases to get the tractor started in my point of view is strictly prohibited.
