barbwire dispenser

I started a 4 roll barbwire dispenser today. Have it about half built. As it is a prototype will try it and make improvements as needed.
It will have a easyhitch on it so you can have a trailer in the field too. It will be made with an extra insert for the hitch so it can be put on the back of your pickup too.

ok, finally had time to get it out of the shop.

I am hoping the pipe fairlead will keep the wire from flipping off the spool and if a person goes at a reasonable speed it should work just fine.

Nice job. Are those exhaust pipe flange ends that you used? I'd like to hear how it spools out. Thanks for sharing.

Yes they are exhaust flanges. Went to the local muffler shop and he knocked them out for me. As I take my rigs there he was nice enough to give them to me.
I haven't put a spool on yet so I don't know how it will work out.

I can't see any reason for problems, but as it is a prototype there is always room for improvement. Will wait for feedback.

One thing is that when the spool gets small and it starts peeling of the inner part, as the wire goes through the fairlead it might want to drift the spool to the outside off the axle. If so I will put on a device to keep it on.

Do you think the barbs will get hung up in the pipe? I have one on the back of my 4-wheeler that mounts to the rack but it's horizontal.

I get 1 strand all jacked up, I can't imagine what sort of bird's nest I'd have if I had 4 strand ran at the same time.

That's a nice build for sure.

I've seen people around here run all 5 strands and stretch them all at the same time. I've yet to figure out the best way to do that.

The pipe is flanged on the intake. Will just have to wait and see how it goes, am hopeful lol.

Just sort of an add on thought when those spools spring forward as the wire feeds out you might get some bird nest in there. If you can put some friction on the spools to keep them from free wheeling when a strand cuts loose might save you some nest. I worked in a cable shop building large wire bundles for aircraft and missles. We put spring tensioners on the wire caddy's spools to help prevent that.

You can run 4 or five strands if you stack them vertical, with a spacer, and then tighten down on the spools for some tension. Someone should be hanging the wire as you pull slow. You can even off set the puller to keep it close to the fence. When I was doing this all by myself, I had an air tank and a 2 in crown staple gun, and as I would pull it tight, I would jump off the tractor and space out the wires and shoot a staple into each wire. Later I would come back and knock in regular staples. It worked for me. You can lay out the red top fence this way also. Either lay it out horizontal and lift it up, or pull it vertical with someone helping with the hanging.

How did you keep the wires tight enough using that method? We normally run the strands then tension them with a grip and come-a-long. Then we go back and attach to each post, although that's steel t-posts. We normally did the same thing with wooden posts.
