I have a 10-acre farm, mostly pasture in rotational grazing for dairy-meat goats, some bottle lambs and a Jersey cow-calf unit. For the past 11 years, I have used riding mowers for mowing, cleaning barns (with pitchfork, utility cart), spreading mulch, etc.; however, I'm getting older and need a small tractor w/FEL for barn cleaning, bush-hogging and snow removal (I live in north-central MI)

My local Kubota dealer has a used 2002 BX2360 w/FEL with 1500 hours, for $8,000 at 7% financing; a 2009 version costs $12,900 (0%, 48mos financing). Is this a good price for the 2002 tractor? Are there any major defects/downsides to buying the older one... ie, is it safe for someone who knows nothing about tractors? :)

I've read a few reviews here and they do sound rather discouraging (tippy, dangerous w/FEL, etc), plus the BX2360 seems a bit small; unfortunately, the B2320 at $14,300 is out of my price range.

any suggestions?

Its not a BX2360, they've only been built since 2008. Its probably a BX2200 or BX2230. Thats alot of hours at that price point. We just sold a T/L with 300 hours on for $7300.

Don't worry about what the few things you've read online. They are true of any small tractor and can be overcome simply by learning to be a good operator.

Listen to Messicks. That's alot of hours plus that's high for one that old and that many hours. If you lift FEL high in the air and drive around any tractor is tippy. Keep the bucket low on BX and they are actually very stable. The BX can do almost anything the B can do if ground clearance isn't a problem. The B is a bit bigger so has available a bigger bucket so it can move stuff a bit faster and may get better traction for moving cutting a bit faster but the BX can do it.

Thanks for the advice. I was rather surprised at the number of hours, but the dealer said that the price wasn't that high because Kubotas keep their value and used ones were hard to come by since most people keep theirs.

I admit I'm rather nervous about buying a used tractor. Guess I should keep looking for one with fewer hours? Or else get a new one, especially if "they keep their value". He's the only Kubota dealer around the area. I've been told that Kubotas are the only tractor not using parts made in China.... one reason why I want to buy one, as opposed JD or NH.

Could a BX2360 move a round bale with a spear in back?

So the DEALER said the "the price wasn't that high"?
"Kubotas keep their value and used ones were hard to come by"?
That's bull feces. They keep their value but there is a constant turnover, many times because peeps move up in size, except for LBrown.

Check Barlow's Used Kubota Tractors.

For reference my ride, trailer and box blade (not BH) cost $11.5K last April.

A big bale would be very tough with a BX, a B would be the minimum size for that
