Grapple Pics of my new Grapple!

I'm getting ready to purchase the W R Long OBG but not sure which size to get, 48" or 56". 56" has two grapples -vs- one grapple for the 48".
Tractor is a Bobcat CT230. Is wider better if the tractor will handle it. 56" grapple is 460 lbs. Opinions please.

That is not an easy question to answer. There are several factors to consider, are you going to just be scooping up loose debri such ans limbs and brush? Are you needing to grub into the dirt? What is your lift capacity?

If you have a very large lift capacity then you do not need to be as concerned about weight.

If you are going to be doing a lot of grubbing then you want heavier construction.

If you are primarily concerned about picking up large volumes of light material then a wider, deeper grapple would work better for you.

I would not recommend my grapple as being optimal for everyone here as I bought mine for grubbing out and moving rocks for a tractor which has limitted lift capacity, 2000#. My grapple is only 42" wide and made of 1/2 steel.

I sold my old backhoe, it had a 7,000# lift capacity, for that old beast, I would have bought a 72" grapple made of 3/4 inch steel.

A quick google search indicates your loader is rated at 1250#. I think a 460# grapple would eat up too much of your lift capacity. You can find lighter grapples that would be a better match for for your tractor that seem to be tough enough to get a lot of work done. Search the site for threads on the Markham grapples. They make a 48" wide 3/8" construction that many here are having good luck with.

Good info., thanks for the reply. My only need is brush piles, small logs and
debris. No need for rooting or grubing.

Skinnyman, you will be supprised what you end up doing with your grapple.
i have the 56" model and can't say enough about it. WR Long makes a VERY high quality unit.

I have a 48" markham. I've never said I wish my grapple was wider and I think the bigger advantage is more lift with a narrower grapple. IMO

Another vote for Markham. I purchased their 60" light duty grapple and have been impressed so far.

I used it last week to fill 4 loads of concrete and never had to leave the tractor seat. Most of the slabs were 8"-10" thick with several taxing my FEL limits. I'm also using it now to clear some land for a foodplot. Moving huge piles of brush and some good size trees has been no problem. I've been doing a lot of work using a 45 horse tractor and it has held up just fine.

I never thought a LD grapple would hold up loading concrete slabs like that. I envision them as being only good up to something like logs.

That's good to know. I use the 4/1 bucket on my LB115 which is plenty heavy, but I think a gapple on my MT285B would be really handy. It's almost identical in size to your Case

Man, this stuff never ends. I could spend 10K on implements.

Here is another use for a grapple. I ordered one for a walkbehind skid loader and adapted it to my trackhoe. It is amazing what you can grab with it.

Markham's description of "light duty" is based on them only building skid-steer implements for years. They are new in the tractor world...and don't fully realize that CUT loaders do not have the power of most SSL's, and most CUT owners do not abuse equipment like most SSL operators do. Light Duty to them is Heavy Duty to us!
