John Deere 4300 complete rebuild

WOW!

And I thought I was taking on a big project with the tractor I just bought. You give me courage to tackle the two issues that need repaired on mine.

I'm not fixing my tach though, 'cause the tach assembly price for my 2240 was $1500.00. Think I work on the steering and 3PH first.

Here is the steering column and hyd valve just before it went in. I added
all new rubber isolators (4). They were shot. After that was the fuse
panel and the connected wiring harness. The instrument cluster looks
great, after redoing the glass lens and seal.

The second photo is on the electro-magnet of the cruise control system.
I tested it and it works. The panel lights and fuel guage work, too, but
sadly, not the hour meter. I will test the tach as soon as I fire up the
engine. Very soon, now.

This is a very nice project. Great job on documenting it as well as explaining things to every one on the forums. Im still excited to see the finished product.

It runs! 11-14-09 at 6:05PM. I have been chasing down electrical
issues for a few days. Purrs like a kitten (tiger kitten).

Congratulations on the rebuild. Thats got to be a good feeling.

Congratulations Dave! If that 4300 could talk, I'd bet it's saying "Thank you!" for making it like new again.

Thanks, guys.

I will be testing the HST today, as well as other systems.

This tractor still needs an hour meter, a fuel sending unit, a battery
hold-down, and I am replacing almost all the FEL hoses. I plan to make
a 3rd SCV valve handle and a backhoe subframe as well. My 3rd SCV
setup will use its own mounting bracket for the 2 QA couplers. Pix of
the tractor with new body panels are coming soon.

It is a bit surprising to find out that the hour meter is designed to only
come on when the tractor is running. It is tied into the tachometer, which
runs off of pulses from the alternator. I would think that you would want
to be able to read the LCD hour guage even if the tractor is not running
and racking up hours. Kind of like reading the LCD odometer on your
car when it is not running.

That is not how my 4400 works. My hour meter is on when I turn the key on. In retrospect, having it "on" when it gets pulses would certainly avoid the "I left the key on" and added 200 hours to the machine mode...

That is very interesting, Wayne. I drew my conclusion from the fact that
the LCD display showed nothing until I started the tractor for the first time.
At that time, I could see a few pixels were showing in the display. I will
look into taking apart the panel again and checking for cold solder joints
or bad contacts.
