Hey There. Nice set up. I'm from Orange. I'm looking to order a 2305 from G&H next month and I'm looking at that Log Splitter. Looks like it might work well.

Hey FDMARS...

I'm new to the forum and just bought a 2001 JD 790. I also live in Ct, not far from Middletown.
I've been looking at the Powerhorse splitter that you have, but I wasn't certain how to hook it up to my mchine. It looks like you have hydraulic llines running all the way forward to the quick connects for the FEL. I believe I will have to do the same.
Is that how you are operating it ?
Do you have to bungee your SCV in one direction to get flow ?
Where did you buy the hoses and fittings to hook this all up ?

I am not sure what a 790 is or how big, but yes I ran hoses to the quick disconnects for the loader, and had to bungie the control valve to get the flow for the log splitter. you need to use the correct 2 ports ( like loader up and down) to make it work. I will at some point add a power beyond kit to my tractor (ports at the rear of the tractor) so I can do both the splitter and use the bucket. Hope this helps. Fred

ps sorry, had the hoses made by local dealer, and they were incorrect. Had to get adapters to make them fit from A&L hydraulic in New Haven, they were very helpful

Welcome to TBN Tommy:D,

By far, the BEST way to power a splitter is with a Power Beyond kit for your machine. It is designed to operate implements with their own valves like logsplitters and backhoes. You can get this kit from JD for about $250 or so. You can also use the loader ports and bungee the joystick, but this is a less than perfect way to do it as the flow through the FEL QD's will be lower than with the PB kit.

This is what I was thinking of. <http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200365529_200365529>
It's the Powerhorse 13 ton beam kit from NorthernTool. It's on sale for $300.
I was thinking that I could have something fabricated so it can attach to the 3 pt hitch, then feed this from the FEL quick connect fittings below the left footrest on my tractor. It does not come with a valve so I would operate it from the tractor SCV. I know this doesn't sound convenient, but I plan to have at least one of my 3 sons (or wife) outside with me when I split wood. Hopefully they load the splitter and I operate the lever. I burn less than 2 chord of wood a year in a small wood stove in my living room, so there won't be any giant pieces of wood to split. If I invest in the power beyond kit, then a large wood splitter, I'd be in it for over $1000 and that hardly seems worth it for only 2 chord a year.

If I'm totally out to lunch on this plan, or someone knows of a better value, please let me know.
