John Deere 4300 complete rebuild

   / John Deere 4300 complete rebuild #421
It is interesting that I found a surplus 4400 engine in TX, from an engine
distributor. It was a JD new reject, dropped, I think, for $1700 plus
shipping. That would have gotten me some more juice. I decided rebuilding
was much more economical.

Plus the 4400 has a slightly longer wheelbase, so I don't know if the hood and side panels from the 4300 would have worked.

Really? It has a longer wheelbase? (I've never seen a 4400 up close.)

Cause the 4300 and 4400 share the same frame and the hood and side panels are the same 4200-4400.

According to the parts book, the only significant differences between the
4200, 4300, and 4400 is the engine and related parts. There ARE different
wheel sizes offered for each model, which may explain differences you may
have seen in product brochures. Do you have a product brochure?

There is only one official parts book (588 pg) for all three tractors.

dfkrug, would a 4300 or 4400 engine hook to the rest of a 4200 (hst, pumps, etc) from what you know?

Yes, I am sure of it. The parts #s for the axle, bell housing, etc. are
the same. The implement pump for the 4200 is diff from that of the
4300/4400. Probably less flow and/or pressure. The latter pump
may bolt to a 4200, I can not tell.

My look through the parts says the starter, pump, and oil lines are the biggest differences. Would be nice to be able to hook the 4200 pump to a 4400 engine sometime down the road.

Dang late night dyslexia strikes again. According to my JD literature, the 4200 has a 65" wheelbase, while the 4300 & 4400 have a 68" wheelbase. Overall length is the same at 117" for all three.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm glad you pointed that out. It makes a lot of sense now that they're both longer. The bigger wheels of the 43/4400 have to fit somewhere and that somewhere is created by pushing the engine/transmission/axle back on the frame some. I say that because the only related parts difference in the models in the parts guide is the front driveshaft and my guess is that its three inches longer than the one for the 4200.

Well, I have not updated this thread in a while, mostly because the next
big step is to get the FEL mounted and refurbished. Doing that calls for
my fork frame/boom, which was not mounted to my main tractor. I just
got it mounted yesterday, so more is coming.

Also, I have been busy making a subframe for the 4300, which is now
complete. I hope to start that thread as a new one, with emphasis on
general subframe building for any CUT and any hoe.

The temp was warm enough to put my last label on the left of the hood/
cowl. I have been driving it around with the new hoe and subframe on,
and it works great.

You might want to check where you left your glasses...That hoe doesn't look to be all there!
